About the Role:
Cruise’s Detection & Response team defends against adversaries and internal threats. We are focused on protecting Cruise: our autonomous vehicles and technology, our employees, and our customers. To accomplish this, we are building robust and innovative data pipelines and detections, automating incident response, and developing leading-edge solutions to collect and forensically analyze data in both security incidents and investigations.
Detection & Response consists of two teams: Response, and Detection Engineering. In this role, you will manage Response, which detects and responds to both cybersecurity and internal threats. We are looking for an inspiring leader to manage a team of deeply-technical security engineers focused on incident response and investigations, and build out a global team as we scale.
This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to take their management and leadership skills to the next level. As Cruise approaches commercialization, we are continuing to build out Response’s engineering resources and capabilities. Initially, you will directly manage a team of incident response-focused engineers, but will eventually be hiring Technical Lead Managers to report to you. These managers will provide frontline, technical leadership to subteams within Response.
You will partner closely with Detection Engineering management to ensure communication and collaboration across teams, and maintain alignment on prioritization and execution. You will also focus on building close relationships with partner investigative teams, including Legal, Global Security and Employee Relations, and consider how Response can provide optimal investigative support through log and endpoint forensic analysis.
You should possess extensive experience in incident response and investigations, outstanding communication and organizational skills, people management experience, and a passion for people and relationship building. If that’s you, we’re excited to talk.
What you’ll be doing:
- Grow and develop a team of security engineers focused on incident response and investigations.
- Collaborate with engineering teams within and outside of Security on key cross-functional security initiatives.
- Work closely with the Technical Program Manager to prioritize and plan key projects.
- Partner with Detection Engineering on prioritization and ensure excellent communication between teams.
- Collaborate closely with partner investigative teams on both security incidents and investigations.
- Build out a global, follow-the-sun model for Response. Consider when and how Response should scale, and hire strong leaders to manage areas of the team based on function or geographical region.
- Alongside senior Security leadership, strategize and execute on the team’s short and long-term roadmap.
What you must have:
- Empathy, and a passion for people’s happiness, fulfillment and wellbeing.
- Commitment to ensuring healthy work-life balance for your team.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Inspiring long-term vision for incident response and investigations.
- Innate ability to execute on dynamic initiatives with little direct supervision.
- Experience building and leading security and investigation teams.
- Understanding of the threat landscape, the incident response process, and digital forensic methodologies.
- Understanding of the challenges in detecting and responding to threats in cloud environments.
- Experience with investigative tools, e.g. osquery, Carbon Black, Crowdstrike Falcon, Bro/Zeek, AXIOM, X-Ways and Oxygen.
- Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact on the world.
- B.S. in CS, Math, Physics, or equivalent real-world experience.
Bonus points!
- Experience building out and managing a global team.
- Experience managing frontline managers or technical leads.
- Contributions to the security community (open source, public research, blogging, presentations, etc).
- Well-regarded security certifications (e.g. SANS GNFA, GCFA, GCFE).
- Master’s degree in a security discipline.
