Description
The engineer who will fill in this job open will support Caterpillar drivetrain product development and improvements and CPI issues by performing FE dynamic and thermal mechanical analysis and virtual validation. The responsibilities include, performing necessary analysis and initiating ideas; evaluating new products, processes, or systems; communicating results to customers, suppliers, team members; supporting other engineers; providing best actionable recommendations and solutions.
Job Duties
The key role of this engineering position is to move from learning and assisting others to fully contributing. This is the beginning of building deep expertise in one or multiple fields. At this level, the Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application begins partnering with and providing technical guidance within and between units and other teams. Projects typically range from three months to two years. Ability to gather relevant information, compare and contrast data, identify relationships, and predict and manage failures is critical. Challenges include challenging the status quo and championing new initiatives, collaborating with team members and other teams, and keeping abreast of advancing technology. Decisions may affect the work group or project team, suppliers, multiple units, and both internal and external customers, and these decisions have significant impact on warranty, total cost of non-quality, customer perception, costs, sales, and the leveraging of technology.
The Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application may work in any number of functional areas requiring an engineering degree, including, but not limited to, product design, development, research, metallurgy, quality, reliability, materials, manufacturing process, application and installation, product performance/support, service, and facilities.
Individuals may have multiple assignments during their tenure as an Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application. Assignments may require the Engineer to review the work of technicians or other support personnel, provide technical advice to individuals at various levels in the organization and work with another unit or team. Assignments will become more complex and require the Engineer to assume a significant role, either as an individual contributor or as part of a project team, with increasing emphasis on analyzing, identifying, and applying engineering techniques to solve problems and make recommendations.
Key areas of responsibility encountered in this role may include any or all of the following: perform needs analysis and initiate ideas; evaluate new products, processes, or systems; communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units; contribute to the design of new products and processes; perform product and process maintenance; collaborate with and support other engineers, managers, marketing personnel, customers and suppliers, maintain technical currency, and represent the company externally.
The Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology. Key learning should be rounded out during this tenure, including knowledge of Caterpillar and competitive product performance and application, understanding of customers' needs, working knowledge of key processes, data analysis, and data extraction skills. Project management skills are being honed at this level.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field
5+ years of industrial experience in drivetrain structure simulation
In lieu of the above, Caterpillar would accept a Master's in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field with an academic focus on finite element analysis, Must also have 1 year exp in using linear and nonlinear Finite Element Analysis(FEA) and performing structural simulation of power systems.
Top Candidates will also have
PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field
1+ years of industrial experience in structure simulation
Proficient in ABAQUS, Hypermesh, Simlab, or other commercial FE software packages
Experienced on static stress analysis, heat transfer, nonlinear material and large deformation, contact/impact, dynamics, and thermal mechanical FEA analysis using ABAQUS or ANSYS
Experience on surrogate model based on reduced order modeling or machine learning/deep learning techniques in the context of finite element analysis
Strong initiative, communication skills, customer focus, teamwork, and planning skills and be able to manage multiple projects concurrently
Experience in structure tests
Experience in machine dynamics
Creo skills sufficient for FE modal preparation
Good communication and people skills
Leadership experience

The location for this position is Mossville, IL
Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.
This position may require less than 10% travel
