Description

Basic Function:

Under minimal supervision of more senior staff, assists in the planning, design and development of technical standards for gas distribution infrastructure projects. This position is typically assigned to perform basic tasks and analysis on larger projects or perform standard tasks on all phases of smaller projects.

This position is being posted as part of a job family.

The position may be filled at either the Associate Engineer (Level 3), Intermediate Engineer (Level 4) or Engineer (Level 5). Individuals who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education and certifications may be eligible for the advanced grade.

Higher grade levels will work independently on more complex gas transmission, gas storage, and gas fueling station assignments. Tasks assigned to a more senior Engineer often involve the consistent recognition and development of new or improved products/processes or techniques that substantially impact how Southern Company Gas does business on a daily basis. This may include system planning, designing and development of strategic and large capital projects for regulated and non-regulated businesses.

Position may be required to perform the following engineering disciplines, depending on assignment:

Design - Performs engineering assignments involved in the design of components, features or functionality of pipeline products and operations.

Compliance - Conducts audits/reviews and tests to ensure compliance with government/industry regulations and standards.

Systems - Performs engineering assignments involving gas operations, system modeling and system design.

Project - Performs engineering assignments as part of a work team involved in planning, organizing, developing and managing complex projects.

Mechanical/Maintenance - Performs engineering tasks involved in the planning and design of mechanical equipment and components and associated tasks involving maintenance of mechanical equipment.

Hydraulic analysis- Perform system balances to determine best overall solution to solve system issues or identify system low points and methods to best solve them.

More senior positions require the following disciplines:

  • Initiate project statement to get consensus on scope, deliverables, timetable, and budget.
  • Collect and Evaluate data required to perform engineering and design work on natural gas projects/requests (pipelines, meter & regulator stations, and gas plant facilities (gas storage, compression and vehicle fueling stations).
  • Work independently or as part of a team to develop options, propose solutions, and complete tasks.
  • Provide oversight and support for construction activities.
  • Develop and comply with gas transmission facility standards and processes for asset development
  • Manage outside engineering services to ensure project goals are met

LEVEL 3:

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil or General)
  • 1-2 years of progressive Engineering experience

Or

Equivalent academic education and experience

Skills:

Required:

  • Project Management
  • Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
  • Computer Assisted Design/Geographic Information System - basic proficiency
  • MS Office - advanced proficiency

LEVEL 4:

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, General or Civil)
  • 2 -3 years of progressive Engineering experience

Skills:

Required:

  • Project Management
  • Ability to communicate with all levels in the organization
  • Ability to influence and persuade in decision making.
  • CAD/GIS - intermediate proficiency
  • MS Office - advanced proficiency

L EVEL 5:

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • BA/BS in Engineering (Mechanical, General or Civil)
  • 5 years of progressive engineering experience in gas standards and materials, project engineering or construction management of natural gas, pipeline facilities or other applicable industries.
  • 2 years familiarity and experience with Gas Safety regulations or utility pipeline construction practices

Certifications/Licenses:

Preferred: Engineer in Training (E.I.T.)
