The Caterpillar Oil, Gas, Marine Division (COGMD) currently has an opening for a Sr. Engineer - Configurator/Systems Integrator focused on power train systems / applications & site level solutions in Houston Texas. This position will have focus on mechanical, electrical, and hybrid drive train pump based solutions for drilling, production, gas compression and well service within the COGMD division
The key role of a Sr. Engineer - Configurator/Systems Integrator is that of contributor to the planning and delivery of a project. This position will be accountable for contributing to the concept, development, and design of complex systems, subsystems, and/or process controls. This position performs complex analysis work, identifies design problems / opportunities, and drives the team to resolve the problems or enhance the design. Although this position may transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery. Incumbents may work more directly with different business units, suppliers, customers, and/or other support teams. This requires the ability to communicate technical information in a concise and accurate manner. Decisions made may affect the project team and its delivery of the project. Decisions may significantly impact on negotiations with suppliers, leveraging new technologies, warranty, costs, sales, and customer perception.
This position will be involved in various integration factors with variable frequency drives, E-motor selection, switch gears, genset selection, energy storage systems, grid integration, variable fuel delivery systems, variable gaseous engines & support systems, diesel engines, transmissions, pumps, power train support systems, cooling systems, and integrated user interfaces supporting site level performance. Additional responsibilities include validation of the power train performance and messaging of the added value with internal and external customers.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts
Challenge of meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities
Adapt or apply new technologies.
Keep up to date with customer trends and needs.
Lead delivery on sub projects or main projects.
Provide technical support and input to assist in the closure of product issues.
Perform needed analysis and simulations to initiate ideas and focus various teams on the critical goals.
Identifies product opportunities and technology enhancements expanding value for the customer.
Manage product portfolio selection, prints, sourcing, and design control.
Develop FMEA based test plans and system/software validation activities.
Creation of technical specifications, integration & interactions documentation for various design controls from L3 components, L4 & L5 systems.
Collaborate with various product group teams as well as external partners to ensure program requirements are understood, delivered on time, and within budget.
Support and communication of system level releases.
Test plan development and performance validation activities, including documentation required by field follow and/or customers for successfully updating iron and software.
Manage individual project budgets.
Protect Caterpillar’s intellectual property.
Support simulation models on performance and control developments.
Champion simulation best practices for power train solutions and drive needed tools for product improvements.
Develop strong peer relationships and collaboration with global oil and gas teams.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited curriculum.
8+ years of relevant engineering work experience with increasing responsibility.
Technical leadership skills and ability to concept and sell ideas.
Ability to tie ideas to customer bottom line.
Team center and design control knowledge.
Deep understand of quality controls and geometric tolerancing.
Experience with testing, simulation, controls and calibration
Background in mechanical power train components (engine & transmission)
Understanding of pump site applications (fracking and fluid transmission).
Understanding of genset and microgrids.
Understanding of failsafe methodology.
Ability to navigate risk in balance of progress.

Design and integration experience with microgrid power management between utility, gensets, and energy storage.
Design and performance experience with various mechanical and electric power train systems.
The ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously and to make sound priority decisions.
Roles in engines, transmissions, power generation, or machine systems is a plus.
Previous A&I, customer service, or DTO experience is a plus.
Experience with FMEA processes and applied failure analysis.
Strong communication skills – Oral and written complemented by the ability to develop/deliver technical presentations internally and externally to aid technical sales to customers.
Interpersonal and demonstrated leadership skills.
Travel & Commute:
Up to 20% travel
