Job DescriptionAn engineer 1 is part of a key team of Nordstrom Technology professionals that applies scientific, mathematical and social principles to design, build, and maintain technology products, devices, systems and solutions. These technology products and solutions provide amazing customer experiences while meeting the needs of the business. The scope, responsibility and accountability is at the function level.

A day in the life…

Contributes to design, collaborates with local team and has scope/accountability

Tests all scenarios and conforms to quality standards

Measures and understand local scope

Conforms to secure coding practices and secure system fundamentals

Displays knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals related to own work

You own this if you have…

Familiarity with basics of instrumentation

Relevant practice-specific certifications

Bachelor’s degree in CS, Engineering or equivalent work experience

Professional experience in engineering or related field (preferred), may be recent grad

Finding balance for her people — and providing cover when needed

Through her career, Meagan has worked to foster work-life balance for her people. She starts by gauging their engagement: Are they energized or burnt out? If the latter, she encourages them to take time, and then does one better: She eliminates any accompanying anxiety by providing cover. “I tell them how I will handle communication about any project delays to stakeholders and that work is not as important as their health."

I personally value my time at home with my family very highly, and I feel strongly that everyone needs to keep that balance in a healthy place, regardless of whether they have kids at home, or live on their own.

The goal: Seeing you grow

“Nothing makes us happier than seeing you grow as an engineer,” said Christopher. Trunk Club’s learning emphasis manifests in mentorship, pairing rooms, a learning budget and a unique apprentice program. During that six-month program, Trunk Club works with talented people — often from roles outside of tech — as they learn development. And they're playing for keeps, aiming to hire apprentices full time at the program's end.

We actively encourage you to grow beyond your current role. And we provide opportunities to do this. For instance, we offer a yearly training budget to learn new technologies or expand your knowledge in a particular area of the stack.

Weaving together fashion and tech

Trunk Club runs on equal parts fashion and tech — and one informs the other. Jim leads his engineering team as they work with the data science and devops teams to help stylists curate trunks customers will love. “Making recommendations on the fly quickly for millions of products at scale is difficult. We come up with creative ways to integrate our data science predictions so they provide great value and also perform well."

I really enjoy being a person that people turn to to help solve technical problems. I have a lot of fun riffing with our great team on ways to solve difficult problems.
