Vicarious Surgical is hiring a Systems Engineering Director to join our growing team in Waltham, MA. This exciting new Director-level role will report directly to the VP of Systems Engineering and will oversee individual contributors and managers of smaller Systems-Engineering teams. Your team will include individuals with a wide array of technical expertise and talent.  The team will contribute to design controls infrastructure and content, system and subsystem engineering design and development, compliance with medical device standards, architectural decision-making, and numerous other activities. 

Responsibilities

  • Directly manage individual contributors and managers of smaller teams
  • Work directly with Program Managers to assist in developing project schedules and resource-allocations to meet project plans
  • Contribute to development of internal R&D and design-control processes and infrastructures
  • Contribute to aspects of the team’s responsibilities including: requirements, architectures, risk management, compliance with standards, design and development, verification and validation, traceability, work instructions, manufacturing-transfer, and other medical device and engineering activities
  • Contribute to strategic planning including long-term team-growth, organizational hierarchies, and adoption of model-based systems engineering
  • Lead team training, mentoring and career development
  • Collaborate with People & Culture team to establish career tracks and compensation scales
  • Contribute to hiring activities by determining short-term talent gaps, interviewing candidates, and helping to develop onboarding materials for successful orientation of new team members
  • Contribute to fostering strong communication channels within / across teams and departments
  • Interface with representatives from various internal departments to meet their needs and move product development forward 

About You

  • Strong people-management skills; 5+ years' experience as a formal people leader
  • 15+ years of broad-based Engineering experience on complex electromechanical systems
  • At least 5 years of Engineering experience in a highly-regulated industry - medical devices / FDA experience strongly preferred 
  • Broad experience and knowledge across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Deep experience in at least one engineering discipline: mechanical, electrical, software, controls
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully driving complex projects to completion
  • Strong leadership skills - able to motivate people and effectively and efficiently delegate tasks and responsibilities
  • Personable team player - able to respectfully communicate and work with individuals with varying skills, experiences, and backgrounds
  • Strong written communication skills - able to precisely articulate complex technical concepts and generate persuasive presentations
  • Highly organized and independent - able to plan and execute tasks with little oversight
