Title: Director, IT Solutions Engineering

Location: Carmel, IN

The Director, IT Solutions Engineering oversees and manages a team of seven full-time software engineers, one software architect as well as offshore software engineering resources. The Director is responsible for development and advancement of Byrider's software development life cycle (SDLC) as well as a main contributor to the maturation of Byrider's agile methodologies. The role is part of the IT Leadership team reporting into the CIO.

Byrider's focus is on enhancing and maturing the company's technological capabilities to better serve its business groups and employees as well as achieving a customer experience second to none in its industry. In an effort to facilitate this advancement, against an aggressive timeline, Byrider has adopted a cloud-first architectural philosophy and methodology and is actively migrating technologies off premise, therefore, leveraging the power, resilience, redundancy and flexibility of cloud platforms and technologies. As a result of this aggressive timeline, developing software products as well as integrating third party and SaaS products in the most efficient manner is critical to hitting these aggressive goals. Strong partnerships throughout all groups in IT and throughout the organization is a key element of this role and paramount to Byrider's success.

The ideal candidate should possess the tactical leadership skills as well as the vision to enable them to successfully oversee, mentor, coach and lead the software engineering team through their daily work production, maintaining priorities and commitments as well as growing and maturing the software engineering members. This should include efforts focused on both traditional development and agile development and applying best practices. The candidate should have a solid understanding of software development life cycle models as well as expert knowledge of both agile and traditional development principles and practices and the ability to blend them together in the right proportions to fit our business environment.

The Director will work closely and alongside peer groups as well as partnering with business leaders and Byrider's strategy group so that enterprise-wide initiatives enjoy great success. This individual must possess superior communication and presentation skills as the role has a high degree of visibility throughout the organization including senior management and the franchise community.

Finally, alongside the leadership responsibilities, the candidate should have a broad background and well versed experience in technologies and tools that would facilitate the advancement of Byrider's software engineering capabilities.

What You Will Do:

  • First and foremost, the role is a position of leadership. In this capacity, the Director, Solutions Engineering oversees software architecture, software development and product integration and is answerable to the Chief Information Officer and stakeholders for all related activities.
  • The Director, IT Solutions Engineering oversees and ensures that the functions of all software engineers and architects are efficiently and effectively executed.
  • Set standards for software engineering capabilities, including certifications and qualifications for software engineers, success measurement criteria, methodologies and tools to be used.
  • Ensure a well-defined software development life cycle (SDLC) process and champion an ongoing process for improvement initiatives to implement best practices for agile product development.
  • Act as a strategist and champion for enterprise architecture and design principles.
  • Create a 'Center of Excellence' to nurture software engineering practitioners and share knowledge of industry best practices.
  • Promote empowerment of the team, ensure that each team member is fully engaged in the products they develop and are making a meaningful contribution, and encouraging a sustainable pace with high-levels of quality for the team.
  • Ensure software engineers are well supported in managing product team expectations for product deliverables, managing stakeholder communications, and helping to implement an effective system for software engineering and advancement.
  • Assist in team development while holding teams accountable for their commitments, removing roadblocks to their work; leveraging organizational resources to improve capacity for project work; and mentoring and developing team members.
  • Set annual performance targets for individuals and the team and conduct performance reviews.
  • Develop a strong knowledge and understanding of Byrider business functions and goals.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise computer system features to support business functions.
  • Continuously mentor and coach team members in the areas of technical competency and execution excellence with an eye on succession planning.
  • Accountability and responsibility for all deliverables of the Solutions Engineering team.
  • Capable of taking the knowledge and skills of others and leveraging it for improved personal and team results.
  • Overseeing all documentation efforts of changes, problems, investigations and communication.
  • Vendor management and collaboration.
  • May require occasional travel.



Collaboration

  • The role of Director, Solutions Engineering is also one of a cross-functional nature and as such, the Director is expected to liaise with other business peers and store management.
  • The reason for this collaboration is to place the software engineering team and software architect in a position to effectively develop stories that are produced by the product owners as derived by requirements with a collective goal of delivering products that drive the Byrider business.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Expert-level knowledge of product development in both waterfall and agile methodologies, techniques, processes and approaches.
  • 8-10 years of overall software architecture and engineering experience
  • 5-7 years in a leadership capacity
  • 4-6 years experience in agile methodologies
  • Experience with frameworks and products described in "Products and Stacks" section
  • Experience with standard tools such as Atlassian product suite
  • Proven ability to lead product development and ensure objectives, goals, and commitments are met.
  • Knowledge of budget, cost and profitability metrics.
  • Credibility as a senior-level leader.
  • Ability to juggle multiple goals and deadlines in the context of the big picture.
  • Ability to mentor, coach and effectively transfer expertise to others.
  • Ability to build a strong network and relationships at executive levels with technology and solutions, customers and vendor groups.
  • Clear and accurate written and verbal communication with various levels of customers and internal staff as well as excellent group presentation skills.
  • BS or BA degree required (preferably in Information Technology)
  • Formal business experience, training, and education
  • Technology related certifications are a plus
  • Resilience and resourcefulness.
  • Very strong customer service focus.
  • High energy and self-motivating.
