Director of Engineering, Immersive Learning
About this role
We're excited to say that this is a fully remote role with eligibility to work anywhere in the United States, as well as in Ireland and Turkiye. While you will get together with your team on a semi-regular basis (monthly or quarterly, depending on the team), we want you to thrive wherever you work best!
Udemy has an incredible global impact on scaled online education. The breadth of topical domains we cover, our vibrant instructor community, and the number of organizations relying on Udemy Business to upskill and reskill their staff is unmatched.
When we consider learning science, there are several important phases in the learning journey: passive learning (expanding what you know), active learning (expanding what you can do), and meaningful authentic application of what we learn in our lives and work. To date, much of the learning on the Udemy platform tends toward passive learning. However, as focus shifts globally toward skills, active learning is crucial - whether through authentic and safe practice, or direct skill application in real life.
We are expanding the set of learning activities we support to include far more active practice and "doing" as well as improving our guidance and feedback to learners on skill gaps and competencies. In the case of many technical skills, performed in virtualized software environments, giving learners a safe place to practice these skills in an authentic way is a reality today. Looking forward, the set of skills that fit this criteria is expanding rapidly. We aim for these learning activities to be increasingly authentic and immersive. Our goal is for learners to make the best use of the time they can dedicate to learning.
The focus for this role is to provide engineering oversight and thought leadership across our expanding set of learning activities.
In addition to working directly with the teams in these areas, you will partner closely with leaders guiding our:
- Learner Experience: the end-to-end product flows for Learners
- Instructor Experience: the end-to-end product flows for Instructors authoring and maintaining these learning activities and content
- Native Applications: our customers are spending an increasing portion of their time in our native apps
You will be in a position to transform learning for the planet.
The following Leadership and Technology competencies are important to this role:
A good candidate fit will include demonstrated evidence in these, or a clear passion to learn them.
Leadership:
- Sparking and encouraging innovation
- Decision making: with and without data
- Leading through change: influence and clear communication
- Developing and growing staff and leaders
Technology:
- Analytics to understand our customers and systems (Amplitude, DataDog, etc.)
- Services and APIs (Domain-Driven Design, Containers, Kotlin, Kafka, protobuf, gRPC, GraphQL)
- Data Stores (relational: MySQL, Cloud Native: DynamoDB, Aurora)
- Cloud Native Ecosystem (primarily: AWS & K8s, secondarily: Azure & GCP)
- Web Frontend (React, Next.js, edge compute and micro-frontends)
We understand that not everyone will match the above qualifications 100%. If your background isn't perfectly aligned but you feel you would be a great addition to the team, we'd love to hear from you .
