Salary Range:$140,000.00 To 200,000.00 Annually

The Director-Applications Development is responsible for leading, managing, and directing the software development along with data and systems integration efforts for the distributed (non-mainframe), cloud-based and mobile applications at Boston Mutual Life Insurance (BML). This leadership role will develop strategies and provide oversight to the enterprise application development efforts ranging from solutions architecture, design, development, testing and implementation practices for the organization. This leader will help define the Application Development Roadmap and Reference Architecture(s) as we seek to move to a cloud-first strategy, while leveraging and integrating with commercially available products where it makes sense. This role will have direct leadership and oversight over BML development and integration resources and third-party contractors, while partnering closely with other IT and Business leaders.

The Director- Applications Development manages the application portfolio for enterprise (non-mainframe) applications with responsibility for building, configuring, integrating, maintaining, enhancing and eventually decommissioning applications and products through their lifecycle.

The Director- Applications Development, is expected to:
  • Provide leadership and direction for Application Architecture, design and integration strategies for the enterprise, including platform considerations for:
    • "On prem" distributed application deployment
    • Cloud deployment
    • Overall applications integrations across and within platforms
    • Mobile application and mobility strategies
  • Define and enhance methodologies and practices for software development life cycle (SDLC) management in line with industry best practices, ensuring team education and consistency in methodology execution, including:
    • Agile/Collaborative Development practices
    • Secure Development practices
    • Test Driven Development practices
    • Change Control and QA testing practices
    • Automated Deployment and Continuous Improvement practices (CI/CD)
  • Provide Technical Leadership, demonstrated as:
    • A consultative mindset to understand business and product needs to determine optimal solutions development, deployment and integration requirements
    • Consideration of all elements of scalable and maintainable design, end-user experience, security and performance expectations in solutions determination
    • Working with product management to implement and manage application development roadmaps and associated reporting for development phases
  • Solutions delivery and maintenance, including:
    • Building partnerships across IT, the Enterprise Program Management Office (EPMO) and key stakeholders to effectively deliver on prioritized work
    • The development or deployment, maintaining and enhancing application solutions
  • Contribute to annual IT goal setting, and strategic planning activities
  • Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.

  • Establishes a positive, participative and collaborative team environment that inspires creative, high-performing, continuous learning and engaged team members
  • Is responsible for attracting, selecting, and on-boarding a diverse and qualified team and determining the appropriate team resource requirements to meet the organization's objectives and strategic direction
  • Develop team members through coaching, training and development opportunities, and on-going performance feedback including timely follow-up on performance challenges and issues
  • Complete and/or recommend appropriate salary administration for team members in accordance with organizational procedures and practices
  • Review and approve operational expenditures within delegated authorities
Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years of hands on experience in technology and modern software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices.
  • 8 years progressive leadership experience directly leading functional or cross-functional teams.
  • 5+ years' experience leading and mentoring teams in agile software development practices
  • 5 years' experience developing in, or leading teams developing in the following object oriented systems languages and Microsoft technologies like: C#, VB.NET, Visual Basic, Microsoft .NET framework
  • 3 years' experience and familiarity with other programming languages such as JavaSript, MSSQL, Python, HTNL, CSS, etc.
  • Prior experience leading projects requiring design, development and integrations with 3rd party systems
  • Proven experience designing experience designing, building and maturing API layers and/or leveraging 3rd party middleware into legacy environments
Knowledge Requirements & Capabilities:
  • Demonstrates solid knowledge of the overall software development life cycle (SDLC) practices including; agile/SCRUM development practices, secure development practices, testing-driven development practices and deployment automation practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: active listener, ability to build relationships, develop trust, and influence change for employees at all levels including leadership
  • Strong time management skills (follow-up, follow-through, meeting deadlines) for self and ensuring accountability for the team
  • Experience leading and supporting a hybrid workforce (on-site, remote)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven track record of hiring, mentoring and leading a technical team with diverse skill sets.
  • Understanding of the evolving digital landscape, including emerging technologies in software development practices, toolsets and secure development practices and techniques for distributed, cloud and mobile platforms.
  • Ability to effectively drive people, process, and technology change in a dynamic and complex environment
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to explain complex technical insights to business leaders and business concepts to technical teams
Certifications/Licensures:
  • Preferred certifications: Azure and/or AWS certifications in architecture, design and operations

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of Boston Mutual's associates are currently working remotely in accordance with our safety protocols. The selected candidate will be expected to temporarily work remotely for an unspecified period of time as determined in Boston Mutual's sole discretion. When normal business operations resume, the selected candidate will be expected to physically return to work in the office located in Canton, MA. We are transitioning to a hybrid model over the next few months -- with two days in the office (Mondays and Thursdays). Based on business need you may be required to come into the office on more days.
