Director of API Engineering

As a Director of API Engineering at Grindr, you’ll have the opportunity to manage a passionate team of engineers working on Grindr’s key systems. As an engineering leader, you pride yourself in your ability to lead with empathy for your team and turn that empathy into action for our enthusiastic, queer user-base.
You will help the team build for the future by leading the team to design maintainable, reliable, scalable, and well-tested systems to serve a global audience of millions of concurrent users! As a highly innovative agent of change, you help to continually raise the bar and challenge the status quo to help shape and build the best organization in the industry.
What’s the job?
- Lead with empathy and provide thought leadership, expert technical guidance, and mentorship to a team of passionate engineers
- Determine the needs of our diverse & complex user groups, requiring applied understanding and resolution of complex or unusual business problems
- Collaborating cross-functionally with the business and technical teams, bridging the gap between competing priorities and drivers.
- Become an expert in the dating business, in social and communication technologies, while serving the LGBTQ+ community.
What we’ll love about you
- You are an experienced people leader with a proven ability to manage engineers at varying stages of their careers. You have made coaching and mentorship a focus of your career and pride yourself in your ability to mentor engineers on best engineering practices as well as their own careers!

- You have excellent communication, presentation, and documentation skills with the ability to define and communicate the ‘big picture’ to key stakeholders at various levels.
- You don’t shy away from conflict resolution and work to bridge the gap between competing priorities to maintain a culture of collaboration across the organization.
We’ll really swoon if you have
- Experience managing software engineering teams for 6+ years, would be a plus.
- Experience managing scaling applications. Your ability to understand how to let the team grow the application, encourage/remove blockers when needed, and establish your role as an instrument to support your team.
- You have the ability to identify risk areas and guide the team on a multidirectional scope
- Experience fostering a diverse workplace and ensuring that your team’s voices are heard and valued.
- Experience in e-commerce, dating, social apps, or retail would be a plus.
