About Hologram

The future, as we see it, has millions of devices connected to the internet — everything from citywide bike sharing systems to smarter heart monitors to internet-connected eggs to catch turtle poachers. Hologram is here to connect anything to the internet — via our global cellular platform and network available in over 200 countries and territories. The future is connected, and we are connecting it.

We're looking for a Design Systems Engineering Lead who will take a leading role in building a comprehensive, componentized, scalable, accessible design system for use across our digital products. This role will involve deep collaboration with the design team and engineering squads throughout Hologram.

About this role

As a Design Systems Engineering Lead, you will be responsible for writing well-crafted, accessible, extensible, and well-tested components in our design system. You will increase design and engineering velocity by creating a library of well-documented, ready-to-use components. You will increase customer satisfaction and delight by making the visual and interactive experience of our applications consistent.

You enjoy collaboration, have a good eye for design, and are passionate about visual details. You are organizationally rigorous. You have a penchant for curiosity and are willing to explore new tools frameworks, and approaches to best serve the consuming community.

What you'll do:

  • Analyze our frontend codebases, including our existing component library, and work with our Design Systems Lead to craft a plan for creating a comprehensive design system
  • Build out well-crafted, accessible, and extensible components in the design system
  • Make technical architecture decisions that will allow the design system to scale and to be optimally useful to all consumers
  • Define process for integrating design system components into consuming codebases and the contribution model for other squads to work on design system components
  • Work with Design and Product to determine how the design system can best serve prototyping needs
  • Work with our design system Lead to create a design token infrastructure to aid reusability and scalability of the system
  • Analyze the ecosystem for accessibility so that accessibility can be baked into componentry of the future system
  • Lead a dedicated squad of engineers working on the design system full time in a player-coach capacity
  • Collaborate directly with the Design Systems Lead to shape future evolutions and versions of the system

Helpful skills and experience:

  • You have 6+ years of experience as a frontend engineer
  • You have 2+ years experience mentoring or managing other engineers
  • You have experience working on a design system
  • You have experience writing unit tests
  • You have experience working with visual design software like, especially Figma
  • You have experience hiring and onboarding
  • You have experience with accessibility
  • You have exceptional written communication skills and experience writing documentation for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience with the following is a plus:
    • Frontend technologies such as React.js, Redux, Storybook, Typescript, and ESLint
    • CSS organizational frameworks, advanced SCSS, and animation libraries
    • Working with and building remote-first teams

What should excite you about Hologram:

  • A different kind of technical challenge. More than just another app, Hologram delivers internet to physical devices on the move all over the world.
  • We’re committed to writing software the right way, using best practices to write high quality code and giving engineers the space and autonomy to do excellent work.
  • Hologram engineers work up and down the stack, and are actively encouraged to cross-train in new areas of computer science they haven’t worked with before.
  • We collaborate across departments, working directly with designers and product managers to decide what to build and how it will work.

Helpful skills and experience:

  • Experience deploying production user-facing software, especially if it shows an empathetic understanding of the user and their needs.
  • Excitement to get under the hood, find out how things work, and how to make them better.
  • The ability to take broad goals and turn them into specific plans, working through corner cases and obstacles, and exercising judgment along the way.
  • You want to understand how the business works and how your work contributes to its success.
  • You know where and how you do your best work, and what you need to stay in the zone.
  • A talent for moving fast, both in time to first release on a new feature, and on long-running systems code that’s easy to maintain.
  • Eagerness to continue to learn and grow, at any stage of your career.
