About the team


Promethean’s UX Design team works across a variety of products in our portfolio of hardware and software offerings, including our award-winning touch screen panels, accessory hardware, teaching apps, lesson delivery tools, and our user and asset management portal. We obsess over finding creative solutions to our customers’ problems. We lead with our curiosity and strive to learn constantly as we design the technology that will inspire educators, students, and innovators alike. At Promethean, product designers are empowered to take user challenges and find compelling solutions by gathering user feedback, reviewing data for research and validation, designing with user-centered design principles, testing, and validating hypotheses, and continually iterating to optimize work.

 

About the role

 

As the Design Systems Architect you will serve as the architect and owner of our in-house design system, “Embers”. Working hand-in-hand with designers, you’ll design, organize, and maintain the Figma component library. You will also coordinate with engineering to define system architecture, track changes, and review build processes. You will also get into the code and build or edit the component libraries when necessary.

 

You will be our design system thought leader, leveraging your expertise to educate the rest of the organization on proper design system implementation and management. You will lead and champion Embers; leveraging your expertise to educate the rest of the organization on proper design system implementation and management. The ideal candidate has an expert understanding of how design systems work — and how they break. As a hybrid designer/developer you should be able to speak a developer’s language and translate design. You’re able to work within style guidelines, building on existing components and creating new elements. You speak the language of tokens, assets, components and patterns. You are adept at documenting interaction details, working with engineering to optimize work, advocating and communicating changes across teams, and you have a strong process for governing the system. You might have been a librarian in a former life.


You will possess a leadership level ability to communicate details and updates across teams to ensure cohesion. You provide and receive feedback with ease, and you share your work often and openly because you understand that working collaboratively is vital for producing cohesive and aligned products and experiences. 

As a Design System Architect you will:

  • Own our internal “Embers” Design System
  • Aid in the design and development of tokens, assets, components and patterns
  • Work directly with engineering to ensure high quality of component library development, coding when and where necessary
  • Understand the differences between a wide array of devices and viewports and be able to create components for each platform
  • Look beyond the existing system to anticipate future needs and roadblocks
  • Identify opportunities to add and integrate similar components
  • Document, organize, monitor, and continuously improve component libraries across multiple platforms
  • Design and document functionality, interaction, motion, UI states and accessibility details
  • Coordinate with product management to strategize and plan yearly and quarterly roadmaps, as well as sprint plans
  • Collaborate with partners across marketing, product, and research to understand our user’s needs, and design solutions to address them
  • Communicate updates across product teams to ensure system stability
  • Present Design System work often and openly, seeking feedback from stakeholders and keeping wider audiences informed
  • Provide constructive and thoughtful feedback that creates a safe space to freely ideate, collaborate and mentor more junior designers
  • Be curious, open, positive, collaborative and empathetic
  • Think like an owner – scrappy, proactive, organized and detailed

Requirements:

  • Possess a high-level understanding of design systems, with the ability to dive into details when applicable
  • 5+ years of experience in visual design, UX design, research methodologies, and/or product design
  • 2+ years overseeing a design system
  • Ability and desire to communicate work clearly and fearlessly across all teams, early and often
  • Basic understanding of UX principles and user-centered design methodologies
  • Experience designing and developing towards accessibility standards throughout an entire design system
  • Leadership-level ability to work cross-functionally with product teams and engineers to align design system work
  • Understanding of viewports, responsive design, and grid structure
  • Ability to receive and give constructive feedback in a positive manner
  • Expertise with design programs such as Figma, Adobe CC, etc
  •  

    Extra Credit

  • Strong visual eye and portfolio demonstrating modern and clean design (typography, color, grid, layout) Experience creating motion design (micro-interaction and other) – tools, techniques and understanding of how motion enhances the UI, focuses attention, creates hierarchy and provides important user feedback
  • Hardware design experience
  • Experience with new technologies and how they integrate into products: voice and facial recognition, voice command, VR/AR/XR, etc
