Job Summary:
The Design Engineer is an active participant in the design, procurement, fabrication, assembly, integration, start-up, and commissioning of very large-scale automated aerospace assembly systems. They will work with other Design Engineers to concept, develop and design conventional and automated tooling systems and customized machine tools for the aerospace industry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design tools and automation equipment for aircraft and other precision manufacturing industries.
  • Prioritize project goals related to the mechanical design engineering department.
  • Provide support for new product introduction to manufacturing.
  • Creates and revises 3D designs and 2D drawings in accordance with internal and/or customer requirements.
  • Self-checks and reviews all designs and drawings prior to final release to checking.
  • Follows design procedures, fills out required forms and closes all actions associated with internal and customer design processes.
  • Possess required experience, skills and attributes for assigned level in engineering, technology, (software) tools, and personal & leadership on the Engineering Skills Matrix.
  1. Engineering - In training for concepting and stress; trained but needs support in design and technical publications, can work autonomously to create drawings.
  2. Technologies - In training for machine design and integration; trained but needs support in jigs & tools, platforms, and operations.
  3. Software Tools - Trained but needs support in CATIA and GURU.
  4. Personal & leadership - In training for ability to lead, customer interface, requirements management and scheduling & estimation; trained but needs support in process-based thinking.
  • Fields telephone calls from build suppliers and shop personnel for mechanical design engineering problems and associated issues.
  • Ensure all changes, DCNs, and as-built information is incorporated on drawings.
  • Select, record, file, and maintain all component information for concepts and designs.
  • Perform component and material sizing for designs; requests and provides input to cognizant stress analysis engineers.
  • Understand and follow safety & environmental regulations and identifies safety/environmental concerns.
  • Adhere to the Quality System and participates in Continuous Improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Education Requirements:

    • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.


    Work Experience Requirements:

    • Three or more years related experience in one or more of the following: Heavy Machine Design, Structural Design Aerospace Tooling Assembly Systems and Automation.
    • Manufacturing and machine shop background or relevant experience preferred.
    • CAD Software Knowledge:
      • CATIA V5, NX or Equivalent software knowledge (Solidworks, Pro E, etc.)
      • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (Ansys or Femap is preferred)
    • Must be able to obtain, maintain and/or currently possess a Secret security clearance.


    Work Conditions:


      Work Hours:

      • Standard work schedule, overtime may be necessary for meeting deadlines, required travel, emergent conditions.


      Travel Requirements:

      • This position can involve travel up to 20% of the time.


      Competencies- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      • Read and understand drawings and schematics (ie: electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics).
      • Use computer-aided design (CAD).
      • Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner.
      • Familiar with a variety of fabrication concepts, practices, and procedures.
      • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, fixtures, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
      • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
      • Knowledge of engineering and programming including electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and computer programming.
      • Highly motivated and keen to work in a fast-paced organization.
      • Self-starter, ability to work independently, act and deliver results, exercising high level judgment in the absence of explicit direction.


      Physical Demands:

      • Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.
      • Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
      • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
