Job Purpose:

Designs, develops, and enhances new and existing products/product lines. Evaluates and recommends specifications and ensures products meet the technical and functional requirements. Recommends and follows reliable, efficient, and cost-effective procedures. Performs feasibility, functional, and quality testing of designs. Works cross functionally to ensure project milestones are met and that projects are completed according to established timelines. A specialist on complex technical and business matters. Work is highly independent. May assume a team lead role for the work group.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Lead and coordinate the development of new product concepts, new products, or improvements to existing products. Oversees the creation of designs that satisfy the product requirements as outlined in the product specification and resolve design problems.

2. Perform engineering analysis to predict the behavior of the proposed designs. Analysis tools may include the DMAIC process, closed form solutions, or electronic simulation programs.

3. Develop product design plans including budgets and schedules. Execute to plan and take a lead role in control of project.

4. Consult with other product design engineers, marketing, research engineers or mechanical designers on proposed product designs. May be responsible for work direction of designers, drafters, contract/consulting personnel, and others.

5. Work with vendors to finalize designs and implement in hardware, the needs of the product application. Develop specifications and working agreements with vendors. Help assure that the vendor meets the requirements of the design.

6. Perform functions as required by established engineering procedures including project requests through engineering release and change management procedures.

7. Assure that designs meet the requirements of the customer as defined by safety and any applicable industry or Toro standards.

8. Supervise designers and/or engineers which includes selection, training, discipline, performance appraisal, salary review, setting and monitoring objectives and other related tasks in support of engineering project goals and objectives. May also provide work direction to contractors and consultants to assure that they meet the requirements for function, cost, timing and quality.

9. Actively participate in the development and understanding of customer requirements through direct contact with marketing, customers, service, manufacturing and distribution.

10. Coordinate work with the product development team members such, as but not exclusively: Shop, Test, Drafting, CAE, Quality, Marketing, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Advanced Manufacturing, Sales, Technical Publications, Administration, and Management. Conduct and participate in regular project team meetings.

11. Responsible for the drawing package, bill of material, and product specification. Oversee the building of prototypes.

12. Work with test engineers and technicians to develop tests, which simulate the requirements of the customer. Evaluate test data and develops design revisions to solve problems.

13. Support company Quality Policy by working within the documented Quality System. Responsible for the operation of the quality system within their respective area. Participate in quality initiatives and training as needed.

14. Keep abreast of new technological developments, components, concepts, materials, manufacturing processes, or competitive environment, which would affect the design or design process.

15. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering license, or
  • Bachelors degree in an ABET accredited Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering program or
  • Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering from a university with an ABET accredited undergraduate engineering program
  • A minimum of five years of experience, preferably in the powered equipment industry.
  • Must be able to plan and execute all technical engineering activity for complete product development.
  • Has worked on complex issues where analysis requires advanced Design development skills and in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Ability to apply those skills to develop new methods to solve complex problems.
  • Recognized as a subject matter expert (SME) of technology internally and externally. Viewed as a technical leader and consultant capable of influencing the direction on a major project.
  • Demonstrated project leadership. Ability to act independently to determine methods and procedures for new or special assignments. Able to provide project leadership and work direction to others, including engineers, designers, drafters, and support groups, such as Shop and Test personnel.
  • Able to interpret corporate business strategies, technical roadmaps, and external market conditions to originate action.
  • Must be able to direct activities of engineers, designers, drafters and supports groups, such as Shop and Test personnel. May supervise designers and engineers.
  • Has demonstrated competency in creativity, productivity, and decision make and problem resolution through successful completion of projects.


Other Job-Related Components:

  • Guidance is limited to overall objectives and critical issues. Follow-up and direction is needed only on key project milestones.
  • May supervise, provide guidance, and mentorship to designers and engineers.
  • Travel to test sites, distributors, customers, vendors, manufacturing facilities, and others will be required. Travel may be U.S. domestic or International.
  • Ability to work with others in teams to accomplish goals. Includes task and/or project leadership.
