About the job
The Red Hat Products and Technologies Business Insights team is looking for a Data Visualization Engineer who specializes in visual storytelling to join us in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will create visualizations that make insight creation, discovery, and consumption more compelling and interactive. The insights you create, help customers unlock insights that inform their short, medium, and long-term decision making process. As a Data Visualization Engineer, you'll be responsible for building data visualizations in Tableau and creating aesthetic layouts and visualizations. You'll use your analytical skills to develop data visualizations and dashboards that answer key business questions. In addition, you'll also provide support to instill the design and style of our brands into all analytics presentations by preparing complementary assets and making formatting decisions to form one consistent voice for the department.
What you will do

  • Create engaging and effective data visualizations, key takeaways, and other graphic assets to add to Google Slides for presentations
  • Translate complex, technical information into simple, engaging visuals that a non-technical audience will easily understand
  • Meet with stakeholders to develop enhancements for presentations
  • Stay current with data visualization best practices and trends that are happening outside the company to keep our presentation decks relevant
  • Work as an internal consultant on individual projects to take analyzed data and transform into rich interactive data tools
  • Partner with analysts and data scientists to creatively approach business problems with design, data visualization techniques, and a working knowledge of web technologies
  • Establish design standards for the team's output (e.g., customer dashboards, interactive visualizations, and data tools) to make them more compelling and increase our customers' understanding of our data products
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data in order to provide answers to business questions as well as provide recommendations for action
  • Create and maintain data visualizations, infographics, reports, and dashboards in Tableau to track key metrics
  • Develop intuitive, insightful, and engaging interactive dashboards and data products in Tableau for use by strategists, senior leadership, and other key stakeholders across the company
  • Conduct usability interviews with our internal stakeholders to understand goals, gaps, and pain points to inform our self-service strategy


What you will bring

  • College degree in statistics or similar discipline, or 1+ year(s) of experience in business intelligence, data analysis, presentation design, or data visualization role
  • Proficiency with Keynote, PowerPoint, and Google Slides
  • Proficiency with Tableau Desktop or Online software and other visualization tools like Power BI, Looker, comfortable creating new data fields, using functions, and other advanced Tableau functionality
  • Knowledgeable in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop) or other graphics editing and design programs
  • Proficient visual skills, including demonstrable design knowledge, like layout, typography, color and design
  • Proficient analytical skills and critical thinking, able to use data and feedback to make editorial decisions based on best practices and project goals
  • 6+ years of data analysis experience with large data sets
  • Data structuring to optimize delivery performance
  • Creative vision, a passion for learning, and willingness to adopt and share new ideas
  • Experience in SQL, Oracle, or other BI tool for querying data and for data manipulation and transformation
  • Ability to data mine, analyze data, and present insights in a meaningful way
  • Ability to develop and maintain strategic partnership with senior business unit management, business partners ,and project sponsors, as well as communicate effectively with business, and development teams, end users, and product owners
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organization and project management skills
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Legal right to work in the United States
  • Deep understanding of data visualization principles and the ability to go beyond the basics in data visualization design
  • Demonstrated capability of building some cool interfaces using visualization libraries, or in a BI platform
