About the job
We are looking for an innovative technologist with a specialized interest in container technology and application platforms to come join us at Red Hat where you will support customers throughout North America using the latest proven technologies. The Red Hat Consulting team is looking for a Container Application Architect to join us. In this role, you will specialize in the design and development of containerized applications, deployment pipelines, and cloud-ready application architectures. You'll learn to design and guide implementations of cloud-ready applications and deployment pipelines on large-scale container platform clusters using Java, Node.js, Kubernetes, and Red Hat OpenShift. As a Container Application Architect, you won't be expected to know everything on day one, but your ability to learn new technology quickly will be essential. This is a remote position with regular travel to customer sites and can be located anywhere in the U.S. within close proximity to an airport. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.
What you will do

  • Design and build automated, containerized cloud application platform solutions, with a focus on application concerns, including cloud-ready distributed application architectures, migrating workloads to containers, containerized development workflows, and integrating container platforms with automated continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) pipelines
  • Enable and mentor software teams and developers to be successful with building containerized applications on Kubernetes or OpenShift
  • Architect application modernization solutions for customers and oversee consulting teams performing migrations and application refactoring
  • Assist in presales discovery and solutions development
  • Regular travel in the future will be required to work alongside leading financial services, retail, telecommunication, and institutional customers, in line with Red Hat COVID guidelines


After joining Red Hat, you will go through an intensive training program on Kubernetes, Red Hat Red Hat OpenShift, cloud native development, and other related DevOps topics. Here's how your skill set will evolve and what you'll learn during your first year in the role:
At 6 weeks, be prepared to join a project team by acquiring the following:

  • Understanding of how to containerize applications and stand up production-ready CI or CD pipelines with OpenShift, integrated with existing enterprise systems
  • Knowledge of Red Hat OpenShift platform including OpenShift Pipelines, OpenShift GitOps, OpenShift Service Mesh
  • Practical experience with Red Hat solutions and offerings


Within 6 months, be ready to design container platform solutions and lead routine container platform projects by attaining the following:

  • Successfully completing multiple customer projects using Red Hat OpenShift
  • Knowledge of how a customer use case can be developed into an application architecture and project plan based around Red Hat's technologies
  • Understanding of how Red Hat's technologies can transform software delivery (DevOps) practices at large organizations
  • Contributing feedback and contributions like lessons learned, best practices, and how-tos to our internal and external communities of practice


Within 12 months, be ready to design multi-product cloud application solutions and demonstrate technical leadership in container platforms by accomplishing the following:

  • Designing, mentoring, and leading complex, large-scale application containerization, microservices development, or "mono to micro" migration projects in challenging customer environments
  • Helping other consultants learn DevOps and container technologies and processes
  • Applying new technologies, frameworks, or methodologies to containerized application development and deployment


What you will bring

  • Rich experience architecting cloud-native, distributed enterprise applications, leading application development work, deployment through production, and operationalisation
  • Proven experience with software development, including languages, systems, and frameworks like Java, Spring, Quarkus, Python, JMS, Kafka, SQL, NoSQL, and Redis
  • Applied knowledge of modern software delivery methods and tools like test-driven development (TDD), domain-driven design (DDD), 12 Factor App, DevSecOps, and CI or CD, e.g., with Jenkins, Tekton, etc.
  • Solid experience with Linux, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or a derivative
  • Consulting or enterprise architecture background, working in a strategic advisory capacity to senior IT and business executives
  • Solid creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills


Solid experience with software delivery on Kubernetes, including:

  • Cloud native application development on Kubernetes
  • CI and CD pipelines
  • Service Mesh
  • Microservices, Serverless, and Knative
  • Automated testing
