Job Description

ASRC Federal System Solutions supports the Federal Aviation Administration National Airspace System Engineering Support Services (FAA NAS ESS) contract. Join our growing team as a Computer Scientist Level 1 in support of the FAA's AJW-1452 team on that contract. The AJW-1452 Team provides support for the FAA's BI-5, BI-6, SBSM, and WAM systems. National Airway Systems Engineering (NASE) computer scientists serve as nationally recognized subject matter experts (SMEs) in support of assigned National Airspace System (NAS) facilities, systems, and equipment. NAS Engineering has a unique organizational responsibility to formally issue changes to operational FAA NAS systems through problem analysis, design, and implementation of hardware, software, adaptation, and technical documentation modifications. These changes result in correction of design flaws, reduction in logistics costs and field workload, new or expanded capabilities, and/or major life extension redesign.

Responsibilities:

  • This discipline involves the application of, or research into, computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform or present information by means of computer systems.
  • The primary requirements of the work are

  • (a) Professional competence in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structure, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformation.
  • (b) Specialized knowledge of the design characteristics, limitations, and potential applications of systems having the ability to transform information, and of broad areas of applications of computing which have common structures, processes, and techniques;
  • (c) Knowledge of relevant mathematical and statistical sciences.

  • National Airway Systems Engineering Group computer scientists serve as nationally recognized subject matter experts (SMEs) in support of assigned National Airspace System (NAS) facilities, systems, and equipment.
  • The National Airway Systems Engineering Group has a unique organizational responsibility to formally issue changes to operational NAS systems through problem analysis, design, and implementation of hardware, software, adaptation, and technical documentation modifications. These changes result in correction of design flaws, reduction in logistics costs and field workload, new or expanded capabilities, and/or major life extension redesign.
  • Typical computer scientist assignments may include but are not limited to: computer software problem identification, problem analysis, solution determination; requirements gathering; computer software solution design, development, integration, and testing; collecting, recording, and analyzing data/information; writing technical/management reports; performing computer software investigation and inspection activities; recommending improvements to the design or operation of systems, equipment, or processes; and providing SME technical support for new system acquisition efforts.
  • Performs a mixture of basic and routine (but progressively more difficult) assignments under the close direction of a Technical Manager or more experienced computer scientist or engineer.
  • Assists other employees or acts as an individual contributor and/or member of a team.
  • Applies basic technical knowledge to accomplish assignments.
  • Coordinates with a Technical Manager or more experienced computer scientist or engineer to plan time and use assigned resources to accomplish assignments.
  • Works with other employees, both contract and federal, to share information, provide data and/or written analyses, and discuss the status of assignments.
  • Works under detailed instructions provided by a Technical Manager or more experienced computer scientist or engineer.
  • Regularly refers problems and work issues to a Technical Manager or more experienced computer scientist or engineer when existing guidelines are not available or applicable.
  • Work is reviewed frequently during assignments and at completion for all aspects of quality.
  • Work activities typically support the work of other employees.
  • In some areas, the work may affect the safety and security of customers.


Requirements

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with NAS facilities, systems, and equipment is highly desirable.


Education/Experience:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or Mathematics is required. -OR- A bachelor's degree with a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science may be substituted in lieu of the computer science degree, depending on other qualifications and experience.
