Cell Diagnostics/Test Engineer
Description
Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role may require them to work at a GM facility on a every other week basis.
The Ultium Cell Diagnostics Engineer for controls and characterization candidate will work on leading edge battery cell technology for GM's future electrified vehicles. Develops and executes the test procedures for 3-electrode reference battery cells. Works closely with advanced cell design and engineering teams to execute cell control and fast charge strategies, assure new cell design performance learnings are being comprehended in control algorithm development.
Responsibilities:
- Hands-on execution of laboratory experiments on three electrode refence battery cells
- Design tests to efficiently identify opportunities for design improvements
- Work with technical fellow to assist with the development for future commercialization of 3 electrode application to production cells
- Collaborate with the BSE team and R&D on the continuous improvement of all work product produced including DCFC capabilities and Li-plating boundary
- Work with cell engineering team through ATW projects to analyze cell characterization data and assess how cell design impacts the control and safety of the new cell technology
- Work with cell and RESS safety integration engineers to develop safe control limits for operation of cells in RESS - use diagnostic and prognostic methods to root cause and predict cell failures
- Perform analysis of physical and virtual data to synthesize and allocate control and safety requirements
- Develop, apply standard and novel characterization methods to diagnose failure mechanisms related to fast charging of batteries
- Keep abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices
Additional Description
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or equivalent.
- 2+ years of related engineering experience.
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability in relevant engineering disciplines. (e.g. Electrochemistry Based Energy Storage, Control Theory, Battery testing, Propulsion Systems)
- Experience or knowledge of physical characterization of batteries, use of test equipment, measurement systems and lab environment.
- Demonstrate excellent level of analytical ability and communication skills required to build relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and complex projects and assignments with autonomy and accountability for results.
- Demonstrates initiative by reaching beyond work assigned to improve output and/or help others.
- Strong understanding of major automotive subsystems.
- Proven ability in project management skills and ability to teach others.
Desired Skills:
- Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or equivalent.
- Statistical background and certifications.
- Prior experience or knowledge in CAE, testing of batteries.
- Experience with and/or knowledge of relevant battery control and safety technologies (e.g. Vehicle battery systems, high voltage hardware) and standards.
- DFSS Black Belt.
