Title: Category Principal Engineer
Location: Remote (Must be based anywhere in the US)
Reports To: Senior Director, Product & Tech
The Category Principal Engineer will be responsible for the technical direction for Paylocity's product solutions. This includes working with our Core Architecture team to establish and evangelize standards, working with Product Owners to make sure the technical needs of the system are prioritized, coaching and mentoring more junior, but very talented, Software Engineers and Development Leads and contributing working code to our Payroll solution. In conjunction with the Core Architecture team this position will drive the adoption of new technologies, identify and develop re-usable components and perform architectural enhancements in order to maintain a stable HCM solution that will scale to meet the needs of a rapidly growing business.

During the last three months, you would have:

• Design, developed and contributed to some of the most important functionality happening in the product category
• Worked with our Core Architecture team on a standard or framework and evangelized its use throughout the team
• Worked closely with DevOps, DBAs and SysAdmin to make deployments easier to improve team velocity and overall quality of delivery.
• Partnered with a collection of Software Engineers and Development Leads to ensure everyone was pulling in the same direction.
• Enjoyed a team atmosphere that extends beyond the walls of the office

Requirements:
• Served as a Principal Engineer or Distinguished Engineer for 5+ years
• Deep and broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies that affect the business
• MUST be an expert in 2 or more of the following: AWS, Google Cloud, Azure
• Expertise in front-end technologies: React, Angular, Vuejs, Micro Frontends
• Expertise with multiple databases technologies SQL and noSQL
• Expertise with automated unit testing patterns and tools
• Expertise in Containerization, K8, Service Mesh
• Expertise in Data Streaming technologies: Kafka, Kinesis, or similar
• Expertise in security best practices
• Expert in multiple languages including C# or Java
• Ability to thrive in a fully remote organization
• Bachelor's in Computer Science, Math or related experience
• Knowledge of Payroll is a big plus
General Responsibilities:

• Develop architecture and systems that meet the test of time iteratively
• Provide a point of escalation for teams facing extremely complex technical challenges
• Attain a measurable impact on the work of teams across the company
• Achieve a wide sphere of influence
• Provide technical direction for the department by being an expert in the Ops and Enablement space
• Deliver POCs to quickly identify direction and gaps in proposed architecture and feature development
• Collaborates across groups to help them improve their skills (development and security)
• Collaborates with Product Management to help properly position and advance our product in the market
• Meet with customers and prospects to discuss our DevOps capabilities

Technical:

• Identify challenges and technical interdependencies and suggest solutions to address them
• Use quantitative analysis to impact key business decisions

Communication:

• Evangelize successful adoption and use of tooling and technologies
• Lead conversations to encourage collaboration across teams
• Present at relevant events (e.g., conferences, user groups, meetups, webinars)
• Write extensively about technology applicable to Paylocity (e.g., blog posts, white papers)
• Develop and/or consult on internal training programs
• Embody the Paylocity values and demonstrate humility in the way they interact with individuals

Leadership

• Take central role in decision making for technical, business, and organizational issues
• Teach, mentor, grow, and advise other domain experts, individual contributors, and teams in the organization
• Build technology and organizational bridges to key organizational partners
• Work with key customers in assigned areas to address technical challenges
• Exemplify GitLab values through code, reviews, communications, and processes (following and setting)

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position in Colorado is $166,750 - $184,000 per annum. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here.
