General Summary
The Camera & MoCo Engineer is responsible for assisting the day-to-day deployment and setting up of equipment for stop motion animation shots along with programming and photographing of shots and tests. Additionally, they will help design, fabricate and maintain this equipment pool using a wide variety of electromechanical, software, and photographic skills. This position will also support the coordination of repair and advancement of the motion control systems.


Job Functions

  • Deploy, configure and set up motion control equipment on stage, including programming tests and simpler shots, camera and focus rigs, 3D sliders, and other motion control rigs.
  • Build, maintain and modify motion control equipment and motion control/robotic camera cranes and heads.
  • Handle move and setup of (sometimes very large) camera rigs and movement platforms between the working stages.
  • Launch shots in timely manner.
  • Use common electrical diagnostic equipment (meters, oscilloscopes, software tools, etc.) in a test bench and on-set environment.
  • Use various CAD tools to design and build new or modified equipment.
  • Use various hand tools and machine tools (lathes, milling machines, etc.) to fabricate new and modified equipment.
  • Support the configuration of motion control systems by working with the Motion Control Operators to assure that rigs are constructed in a safe manner.
  • Support the on-set maintenance and repair of equipment as needed to facilitate the shooting schedule.
  • Make custom cabling and wire assembles.


Qualifications

  • 3+ years’ experience in film or video production, particularly from stop motion or visual effects environments.
  • Basic knowledge of camera and lighting equipment and an understanding of camera angles and lighting techniques.
  • Prior experience with motion programming.
  • Experience using electrical/test-bench tools and machine/hand tools.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard motion control software tools such as Kuper, Lynx, Flair or ArcMoco, preferred.
  • Knowledge of 3D CG animation programs and ability to write software in any programming language, a plus.
  • Ability to work in cramped environments or situations that would require working on ladders and raised platforms.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee works under typical stage conditions and is exposed to variable indoor temperatures. The noise level is usually quiet or moderate.
