The Role
This Senior System Safety Engineer will be the primary point of contact for technical product safety discussions and decisions for first and last mile non-vehicle transportation and delivery products and devices. The position will provide consistent and timely technical guidance, leadership and mentoring to a growing team of System Safety Engineers. This role requires safety strategy and process development to ensure all aspects of safety are considered across a wide range of products and features.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and recommend practices that establish and promote a strong safety culture
- Lead the development of cohesive, balanced safety strategies and provide recommendations for novel product development, which encompasses product, feature, system, subsystem and component-level considerations
- Establish, implement and continuously improve safety processes to address the unique needs of product development and provide proposals to improve effectiveness and efficiency in achieving end-to-end safety in an agile development environment
- Lead the development of product-level safety work products, including concepts, requirements and analysis, to support the realization of Safety Assessment Reports/Cases to ensure sufficiency and approval for prototype/development testing and production release
- Define and analyze safety metrics to support data-driven recommendations for product safety requirements and improvements
- Lead and assist in resolving conflicts regarding safety requirements and potential safety risks with product engineering teams across organizational and functional boundaries
- Escalate unresolved safety-related issues and pursue the issue resolution process with engineering teams, program managers and leadership
- Formulate and lead independent team reviews and assessments for safety
- Travel as needed (10-20% max)
Additional Description
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, computer, aerospace, industrial) or another related engineering degree
- 5+ years of proven post-graduation engineering experience and execution of responsibilities related to areas such as product safety, transportation safety and/or systems engineering
- Ability to assess all end-to-end safety aspects, including functional safety, Safety of the Intended Function (SOTIF), operational safety, and human-machine interactions
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree
- 10+ years of previous proven engineering experience in areas such as:
- Control system hardware/software
- Design/use of embedded controllers
- Electrical hardware design
- Propulsion, power, battery, charging and/or thermal systems
- Software design/development
- Transportation, delivery and logistics
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach team members of varying skill levels
- Familiarity with transportation and/or OSHA safety standards and regulations
- Proven experience with leading small and complex projects executed using both traditional systems engineering waterfall and agile development methods
