Search and Recommendations is a small cross-functional team that connects Vimeo’s diverse user base with the diverse toolset that Vimeo offers. We own experiences like site search, where millions of users go every month to get inspired, and we also power newer experiences like search over auto-closed-captioned videos. The work that we do involves ingesting hundreds of millions of documents, synthesizing intelligent insights based on that data, and using those insights to power services that delight millions of users.

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer who can help our data-driven team innovate new solutions, scale our current services, and execute on our ambitious vision.

What you’ll do:

• Work with our APIs and datastores to enable them to scale to our millions of users
• Write code that enables our team to ingest and serve user-level data using Go, Java, and PHP—all wrapped up in Docker
• Design efficient and powerful access patterns for storing and retrieving data from Elasticsearch and BigTable
• Achieve confidence in the performance and correctness of your implementations by writing detailed unit tests and integration tests
• Engineer observable applications that allow us to monitor them accurately
• Work with our product manager and designer to innovate new and improve on existing search and personalization experiences
• Play an active role in code reviews and architecture decisions

Skill and knowledge you should possess:

• Familiarity with basic CS concepts
• Experience building and maintaining production APIs
• Expert level proficiency in at least one of Go, Python, Java, or Python
• Big-picture thinking: understand how individual parts fit into the whole, and problem-solve for scale and efficiency
• Clear communicator: ability to communicate your ideas and integrate a diverse set of opinions in order to arrive at an optimal solution
