Associate Engineer

Working as an Associate Engineer you will be the authority/support person for various engineering projects in PAPI Solutions, Process Automation Process Industries (PAPI), providing technical details, costs and deliverables for sales proposals.The ABB Hybrid PAPI Systems Engineering group provides services including front end design studies, design and implementation of control solutions including DCS (Distributed control system)/PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) applications programming and control panel design and site start up services. The successful candidate will have hands on opportunities, under the direction of a lead engineer, to learn and execute standard engineering principles and practices on all phases of control/automation project execution.

Your responsibilities

  • Hands on engineer for assigned control/automation design and development tasks from project kick off through project start up. Perform challenging engineering assignments and activities on select automation projects. Will monitor progress, comply with quality and schedule requirements. Help in process improvement efforts
  • The successful candidate will be professional, responsible, curious, desiring to learn and as such support the design and engineering activities needed to develop an integrated control/automation solution to meet customer requirements
  • The successful candidate will support programming controller applications using various ABB DCS/PLC systems with IEC 61131 programming languages; configuring HMI (Human Machine Interface) terminals; designing field communications with a variety of industry standard protocols; applying an understanding of Ethernet networked devices to design control related networks
  • The successful candidate will support documentation efforts by working with designers to develop submittal documentation (including: BOMs, device lists, schematics, layouts, specifications and procedures) and "as built" packages for each project as well as support development of other written documentation including manuals
  • The successful candidate will also support factory and field system test, field installation, commissioning and startup of the integrated systems

Your background

  • Bachelors degree, preferably in engineering, technology or physical sciences, and minimum experience required in engineering, automation, design, programming, maintenance; OR Associates' Degree, preferably from a technical field, and minimum 2 years' experience in engineering, automation, design, programming, maintenance.
  • Open to travel about 50%.
  • Preferred Qualifications: 2 years experience and interest in Data center and/or Food & Beverage industries. Building Management Systems and/or Power Monitoring Systems. Fieldbus and other industrial communications protocols and techniques for exchanging data among control/monitoring devices. PLC/DCS programming, Robotics Systems, Control panel design and low voltage power distribution.
  • System integration/electrical controls design and engineering including integration of VFDs into control solutions, Integrated system site start-up and troubleshooting. Light and heavy (Steel, Water, Rubber as example) industry control application. Strong computer skills including OS setup in addition to application usage. Strong IP network skills. Strong organization and planning skills, analytical and excellent communication, with strong troubleshooting aptitude. Excellent communication skills, able to take technical concepts and communicate a concise description at any level of understanding.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the USA.
