As an Assistant Director - Software Engineering on the Illustrations team, you'll lead multiple back-end engineering teams in delivering business features for a modern Cloud-based system used every day by advisors across the country to demonstrate the value of Northwestern Mutual and help our clients prosper.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead engineering for the back end subsystems of the Illustrations system, including persistence, integration, and calculations services, as well as DevOps enablement and support for our prior generation desktop illustrations system.
  • Ensure a high standard of reliability, performance, and production stability.
  • Lead teams' focus to overcome challenges and ensure features can be successfully completed and deployed to meet commitments established in quarterly planning.
  • Establish, aggregate, and share standards and best practices.
  • Mentor and coach team members both technically and professionally by identifying and providing opportunities for continuous growth.
  • Partner with peers to avoid silos and achieve outcomes optimized for the larger engineering organization and needs of the business.
  • Promote engagement and an inclusive culture within the team, model company values and behaviors, and encourage collaboration and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Measure and adapt to results through quantitative and qualitative measures of value, outcome, velocity, engagement, and satisfaction.
  • Lead people leaders as well as directly lead engineers.


What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of experience working with modern software engineering tools, languages, and practices.
  • 2+ years of technical leadership experience with direct reports.


What We Hope You'll Bring:

  • Knowledge of C#.NET and JavaScript
  • Experience with GraphQL, REST, SQL and No-SQL databases, back end services, and web security concepts
  • Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD and at least one Cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.)
  • Excellent leadership skills including people management, stakeholder management, communication, delegation, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven track record of successfully designing and delivering significant and impactful technology solutions.
  • Experience developing and leading solution delivery using Agile methodology.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail.
  • Personal accountability, curiosity, passion for high quality, continuous learning, innovative thinking, and building up others.
