The Software Solution Architect is a business-oriented technical role that acts as a primary liaison between the business and development teams. The Software Architect creates a blueprint of the software that the business wants to realize, and the resulting plan includes provisions for business and technical requirements (including standards). In this role, the Software Architect leverages deep technical knowledge and creativity to advise the business team on the feasibility of new ideas and propose new technology-based solutions that improve and optimize Department workflows while also providing technical leadership to the development team. It is critical that this role can effectively translate the long-term business strategies into actionable plans for business and technology stakeholders.
This role will help design, develop, and maintain the United Strategic Platform (formerly known as Polaris) for UnitedHealthcare. In particular, the medical, pharmacy and specialty benefit plan management capabilities that aim to provide consistent and accurate plan data throughout the plan ideation, filing, configuration, and implementation cycles.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Technical Solution Architecture/Design of the system
  • Provides scaling and performance solutions as the United Strategic Platform grows
  • Manages software engineer workload and output
  • Providing senior technical oversight by aligning business needs with the most appropriate solutions and services
  • Coordinates with internal teams to understand user requirements and provides design of technical solutions
  • Technical lead on all strategy, development, optimization, and integration of the Pilot platform
  • Defines and implements technical direction and architecture of projects
  • Explores, leads, and executes automation opportunities
  • Writing, and deploying effective, scalable code
  • Leading estimation of effort and resources required to execute roadmaps and projects for input into the planning of timelines and scope
  • Consults with business unit owners and the development team on business needs, projects, project statuses and proposals
  • Oversees the full product lifecycle from gathering requirements from operation leads, system design, implementation, quality assurance testing, deployment, and support of platform
  • Providing technical supervision of software developers and troubleshooting issues associated with all phases of software and database development
  • Enforcing standards and practices with the software development team
  • Serves as the gatekeeper of all technical changes in United Strategic Platform ensuring the system is maintainable, performant, scalable, consistent, can be integrated with, etc.
  • Identifying, designing/developing, and supporting integration and APIs with other business systems and applications
  • Providing recommendations to ensure all technologies are safe, secure, and compliant with federal and customer requirements
  • Overseeing and performing necessary platform, database, and system upgrades
  • Serving as Database Administrator including database strategy, operations, and development to meet technology objectives
  • Serving as System Administrator for United Strategic Platform and managing technical services
  • Overseeing all IT Operations for the United Strategic Platform system including server management, scripts, event logs management and performance, deployment, network, security, and accounts/services
  • Overseeing management of Azure and all associated services
  • Evaluating, negotiating, recommending, and managing contracts with technical partners, suppliers, and contractors
  • Building and maintaining technical documentation of business systems including architecture, account services and licensure

Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience in leading a team of software engineers, data scientists or other similar technical fields
  • Experience in domain-specific architecture concepts and emerging technologies
  • Experience working with matrix teams including teams in different time zones
  • Experience creating and promoting guiding development principles and influencing development teams, business users and management in adoption of technical solutions
  • Experience working hands on in a data science and/or software engineering role, coding and building solutions that run at scale
  • Experience working with one of more of the major cloud environments
  • Experience working with a variety of technologies, software stacks and languages such as: Java, Windows Server, JavaScript, HTML, Azure, MongoDB
  • Leadership experience in server-side and client-side technologies
