Role Summary:
The Project Lead Engineer for New Battery Programs is responsible for leading the execution of a high voltage, lithium-ion battery pack. She/he is involved with the latest battery technology in General Motors electrified vehicles portfolio for both current and future vehicles. She/he will lead a high-performance team of other engineers and will lead cross-functional collaboration. The Project Lead Engineer for New Battery Programs will directly affect the quality, durability and performance of future hybrid, plugin and battery electric vehicles manufactured by GM.
This job is based in General Motor's Warren Technical Center and will work with GM's Global Battery Systems Lab. The lab is a state of the art facility operates 24/7, covers 85,000 square-feet on the Warren Tech Center campus, and has capabilities to test 112 battery packs and 120 battery cells at a time. The General Motors Technical Center has been named a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The campus opened in 1956 and houses the GM vehicle engineering center, design center, research and manufacturing engineering. It is the workplace of over 18,000 employees on a 1.1 square-mile campus.
Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Lead the execution of a Battery Pack
  • Lead the Battery Pack Product Development Team (PDT)
  • Lead Design Failure Mode and Effect Analyses (DFMEAs)
  • Lead Battery Pack Peer-Reviews
  • Support the Production Readiness and Build Readiness Teams (PRT/BRT)
  • Lead and Support Plan for Every Part Reviews (PFEP)
  • Technical resolution for Battery Pack level issues
  • Provide direction and linkage to Battery Component Sub-PDTs
  • Work to support manufacturing in root cause, build and launch
  • Teach, train and support Design Release Engineers (DREs) to execute engineering work
  • Work with service to ensure serviceability
  • Support purchasing in sourcing of components
  • Support supplier oversight
  • Assess impact to pack program based on proposed changes
  • Represent Battery Pack Status (Performance, Cost, Timing, Issues) to Management and various forums
  • Review validation results
  • Create and execute detailed Battery Pack timing plan aligned to the Powertrain Timing Chart (PTC)
  • Set priority and urgency for Engineering Work Orders, Problem Resolution, CAE and Development / Validation Plans
  • Support Engineering Work Order (EWO) execution and track EWO status
  • Support Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS) and track PRTS status
  • Meet program deliverables and imperatives

Required Skills and Experience:
  • B.S. degree in Engineering
  • Minimum five years' experience
  • High voltage or electrified vehicle safety training and hands on work experience
  • Design for Six Sigma Certification
  • Excellent computer skills including analyzing data, creating presentations
  • High level understanding of engineering theory and principles of automotive energy storage systems
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex
  • Time management skills to meet agreed upon customer deliverables, able to manage multiple projects
  • Interpersonal styles and communication skills to both lead and work effectively with local and international team members
  • Technical writing ability to create written engineering evaluation reports
  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications
  • Experience in structural, thermal, electrical analysis

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Master's degree in Engineering
  • 10+ Years' experience with a major automotive OEM
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX / CAD Software
