Description
This Engineering Group Manager (EGM) role offers you the opportunity to drive development and execution of game-changing Electric Power (EP) technologies and controls strategies enabling cost effective and power efficient systems delivering Fail Operational Power capabilities, enhanced diagnostics, and improved QRD performance to support GM's Zero, Zero, Zero vision for the future.
As EGM you will lead a team focused on the design, development, and execution of new 12/48V EP technologies and ATW projects like GM's patented MODACS technology (Multiple Output Dynamically Adjustable Capacity System) enabling multiple batteries in one battery supporting 12/12V, 12/48V, etc. and GM's SEC technology (Smart Energy Center) providing an innovative diagnoseable and scalable power distribution system both licensed to multiple Tier 1 and Tier 2 partners. You will also play a key role in managing and developing both traditional and new automotive suppliers to drive a portfolio wide integration strategy to meet aggressive cost optimization and timing goals.
What you will do:

  • Lead and manage strategic direction and the development and execution of game-changing EP technologies.
  • Lead an execution team to support 12/48V innovation and advanced technology work (ATW) in partnership with suppliers and R&D focused on new technology development for Electric Power topologies targeting broad deployment across the GM portfolio of vehicles.
  • Develop resource plans, team structures, risk management and execution strategies to convert strategic direction into actionable tactical plans for innovative technology to be seamlessly transitioned to product development.
  • Interface and collaborate with cross-functional teams including systems, safety, OBD and QRD teams to define new technology development processes to specify and balance system requirements for advanced technology development.
  • Commonize technical solutions cross-subsystems, cross-organizations and cross-suppliers to reduce cost, mass and complexity, while maintaining the safety goals/coverage for all features.
  • Support technical requirements (eSOR) development for these new EP technologies and ensure design analysis and verification have full traceable and coverage to meet technical requirements
  • "Close the Loop" on learnings by updating required information (Best Practices, GM Specifications, SOR Template, etc.) and document progress in Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS)
  • Document and comprehend all BOM row imperatives for components under responsibility e.g., piece cost, cost drivers, supply base capability, etc.
  • Lead commodity-specific technical design reviews, sourcing activities, and DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
  • Work closely with the Subject Matter Experts on new battery technologies, controls, packaging and thermal solutions to execute strategies and designs
  • Manage timing; running PDT meetings; issue investigation and resolution; ensuring part and/or software/calibration deliveries to benches, vehicles, and assembly plants; etc.
  • Collaborate with AVDC and propose new EP technical solutions for current and new programs
  • Participate and drive resolution of issues related to the new electric power technology subsystem and components, determine root causes, and recommend appropriate course of action and ensure that it is performed and closed in a timely fashion
  • Stay abreast of emerging EP technologies in the power storage and distribution areas
  • Travel as required


Additional Description
What you will need:
Required skill and experience:

  • BSE/BS in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years experience in project management and process development
  • Leadership and interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively in a team environment
  • Experience with batteries
  • Initiative to reach beyond work assigned to improve output and/or help others
  • Ability to manage multiple and significantly complex projects and assignments with high level of autonomy and accountability for results
  • Capability to provide direction to other engineers and supplier resident engineers
  • Ability to seek and integrate knowledge from diverse sources required to perform the tasks
  • Ability to communicate ideas, plans, and results effectively via presentations and written reports
  • Work effectively with peers, management, operations groups, personnel, and outside organizations
  • Experience managing large budget projects interacting with finance spend plans for forecasting, planning and tracking accrual to ensure budgets are on track and fully realized
  • Software Agile development is a plus
  • DFSS Black Belt required (or in-process)


Preferred Product Engineering Experience:

  • Product development experience in automotive Power Distribution Systems, Li-Ion Batteries and Energy Storage Systems
  • Technical competency and experience in battery chemistries, battery management systems, cell and pack design and manufacturing, and their application to power system design and integration
  • Demonstrated ability to lead Advanced Technology Work (ATW) and insert New Technology into GM product
  • Ability to develop supply base in new technology development and establish long term relationships with them
  • Knowledge of product design and development cycles - GVDP (Global Vehicle Development Process) and Software development
  • High level of competence in writing and comprehending requirements
  • High level understanding of hardware and software design and failure modes in electronic modules
  • High level knowledge of component and software verification/validation processes
  • Experience in the automotive product release and specification process e.g., Engineering Work Orders and Change Management processes
