UX Design Manager
We're the bank millions of customers choose to spend with, save with, and invest in. And behind every one of those customer relationships are thousands of associates working in concert to run the business. Some of those associates are also dedicated to inventing new ways of operating, so we can create even better experiences for our customers. That's where you come in.
Our Global Finance organization is accountable for knowing how every transaction, regulation, and investment impacts Capital One and our customers. Imagine being a designer responsible for inventing systems that dramatically shift how our company's finance associates do their work; how quickly and accurately they see changes, answer questions, and make data-informed decisions to support our customers and our company. Together, we are on a mission to change banking for good.
Who we are
We are a team focused on our internal associate products that support key business functions. We strive to change complex data problems into simple-to-approach data experiences that answer questions before they are asked. Always keeping our users' at the front of our minds, we build relationships with our product, tech, and business partners to work together in realizing a better way to work - focused on improving collaboration, clarity, and data literacy. Beyond the work, our core values of "Kindness, Honesty, and Shared Results" sit at the front of how we work and collaborate amongst each other.
Now, let's talk about the role.
As our UX Design Manager, you'll be responsible for leading a variety of workstreams across our Internal Finance portfolio; establishing and fortifying relationships with a group of talented, kind people whose skills span design, product, tech, and data. As someone that lives at the intersection of design, business, and data, you'll be anchoring customer needs with multidisciplinary teams to take on our toughest business challenges and define compelling solutions. Together, you are reinventing Finance for, well, a Finance organization.
You'll be a great addition to the team if you're...
Collaborative. You're a team player who puts the interest of the team above your own. You mentor others, display a positive attitude, are open and enjoy contributing, which contributes to your respected leadership on the team.
A master craftsperson. You pride yourself in confidently driving projects from strategy through execution. You've got a whole arsenal of tools and techniques at your disposal that you dispatch appropriately depending on the customer and business needs.
A systems thinker. You think larger than just the work at hand and intuitively think at the ecosystem level. You often think about scalability and adaptability across products and platforms.
Passionate. You are genuinely interested in what you do. You make it your business to know as much as you can about the people you are delivering for and advocate for their needs within the business.
A Customer Advocate. You cultivate a deep empathy for people and anticipate their needs. You help them to focus on what's essential at the moment and advocate for their best interest.
A successful juggler. You don't get overwhelmed or flustered easily. You're able to keep track of multi-projects at once, manage your time efficiently and appropriately communicate scheduling with the broader team.
A clarifying voice. You add clarity and focus to every conversation you're in, clearing a path to what really matters and helping others see things in a new, simpler light.
Excited about designing with data. You are comfortable working with data as a raw material. You think carefully about presenting it in a way that helps users focus on what's important.
An inquisitive nature. You aren't satisfied with "just understanding" the customer, but you are genuinely curious in understanding their motivations and their reasoning. You are unafraid to immerse yourself into the complexity of their use cases to truly get at the "why" behind the work they're doing.
What would you be doing?

  • Help deliver world-class products that will redefine the very fundamentals of how we do business at Capital One. Tactfully pushing the boundaries of what can be done for our Finance Associates.
  • Identifying areas of opportunity to bring unity through design across platform, moving beyond just our Finance associates but through other systems that touch various Capital One Associates.
  • Guide and contribute to projects through discovery, research, synthesis, ideation, design, and testing of new product and service concepts.
  • Translate complex data needs into tangible, approachable user-centered experiences empowering users to do more with their data.
  • Advocate for design consistency across your projects and others.
  • Use a breadth of methodologies (design research, collaborative working sessions, prototyping) to deliver to project objectives in changing business contexts.
  • Translate research findings into actionable steps across the team to satiate the need and forge a path towards future scalability.
  • Provide design direction for development, testing, and refinement.
  • Use visual and data-centered storytelling to drive direction, influence stakeholders and partners, and create energy around an idea or an initiative.

  • Designing for early-on UX to high fidelity mockups and prototypes.
  • Collaborative focus with multi-disciplinary teams to develop a rich understanding of the human / business / technical perspectives of varying types of challenges.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum and ability to work with low fidelity and high-fidelity deliverables in agile teams.
  • Experience creating prototypes that showcase design concepts and interaction patterns.
  • Strong storytelling capabilities; an ability to weave key insights into a compelling narrative.
  • Excellent problem-solving and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate your design decisions with partners and influence the shape of the product using research, user journeys, interactive prototypes, and high-quality wireframes.
  • Leading and managing teams.
  • Participate in hiring by reviewing resumes, conducting interviews and attending consensus
  • Curious with a bias toward action and are always seeking new ways to grow.
