User Experience Designer - Remote

Note: This is a fully remote role. The successful candidate may work from any location within the United States. Necessary equipment will be provided by NWEA.

Position Summary

At NWEA, we believe in K-12 students and the teachers, administrators, families, and caregivers who

NWEA is seeking a creative User Experience (UX) Designer for a full-time position within our Experience Design team. As the person in this role, you'll be responsible for translating user research and business/product requirements into sitemaps, user flows, customer journey maps, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes. Using proven Human-Centered Design (HCD) methodologies, you'll identify and define targeted audience segments, their goals, tasks, and criteria for success.

This role works closely with Design Leads, Senior UX Designers, Product Managers, and Technical Product Managers to design the overall functionality of our products. Throughout the design process-from creating user flows and wireframes to building user interface mockups and prototypes-you'll envision how our partners experience our products. Then you'll bring your vision to life in a way that feels delightful while advancing our mission to help all kids learn.

Responsibilities

  • Translate concepts into user flows, wireframes, mockups, and functional prototypes that lead to an intuitive user experience.
  • Integrate user feedback and business requirements into ongoing product updates.
  • Work closely with business analysts, UX researchers, product managers, and partner user
  • groups to ensure that UX requirements and objectives are met.
  • Collaborate with technical product managers to ensure that the design works with the technical solution and propose new designs within technical constraints that still provide a delightful user experience.
  • Participate in and support user research, plan and conduct UX workshops, and conduct usability tests.
  • Participate in executing the overall UX strategy, select and manage tools, and integrate UX
  • design into the product life cycle.
  • Design components for NWEA design system, maintain thorough documentation, and collaborate with developers on the creation and adoption of these components.
  • Advocate for the prioritization of design-centered changes, refinements, and improvements
  • when applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success of the NWEA experience design team
  • and the entire organization.
  • Be cognizant of the impact that design can have on students, teachers, parents, and caregivers,
  • and champion equity in all aspects of your process.



Skills and Abilities

  • Deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and the ability to execute,
  • articulate, and advocate for these outcomes in your designs.
  • Ability to conceptualize the abstract design and product related concepts and deliver designs.
  • Creative ability to envision and articulate the user experience.
  • Ability to work with partners and internal experts to develop user personas.
  • Advanced knowledge of internet functionality and comparative browser features.
  • Knowledge of design software.
  • Knowledge of HTML and other web technologies is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of usability best practices as they apply to websites and online applications.
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and written and verbal communication skills.

Education and Experience

  • Portfolio highlighting multiple projects and direct contributions is a must.
  • Minimum bachelor's degree in HCI, human factors, information design, web design, or related
  • field, or comparable experience in the industry. An equivalent combination of education and
  • experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Three to four years of experience in documenting and creating design solutions for a complex
  • application or service to meet business requirements and objectives.
  • Knowledge of accessibility and accommodation requirements related to user interface
  • development, a plus.
  • Experience working on design systems.
