As a System Architect in the Large Electric Power Systems Controls team, you will provide direction to team members to develop and execute complex controls to help take Caterpillar on the journey to be a leader in power generation paralleling systems. You will be a part of an already global team and help to manage the strategy behind the delivery of NPI program deliverables, continually learning and staying abreast of innovative technology, mentoring and coaching team members to deepen your professional network.
The key role of this position is that of the technical owner of the software and hardware architect and as a subject matter expert for paralleling controls. There will be no Direct reports but will help influence engineers in multiple Caterpillar locations
This position will provide technical leadership and mentoring to teams responsible for design and function of complex electric control systems including generator controls and HMI development. The incumbent will provide engineering leadership in interactions with suppliers, team members and other engineering teams through leading key initiatives, documenting requirements, supporting NPI development and processes, and resolution of product application problems.
Job Duties / Responsibilities:
- Provide technical guidance including interpreting market requirements and support of developing requirements
- Own overall technical direction and platform for controls ecosystem
- Ensure Caterpillar Departments work together to endure cohesive system is achieved on time
- Consult with Engineering Manager own work center utilization
- Collaborate with other engineering teams to define and meet product requirements
- Provide Long Term Strategy for on genset and off genset controls
- Provide guidance and support product regulatory compliance and certification
- Drive subsystem integration tools
- Drive inter and intra departmental communication
- Work with Cat NPI team
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering, Technology, or Computer Science curriculum plus >10 years engineering or product development experience.
- Alternatively, >15 years of progressive and relevant engineering experience (including product application, testing, and process design experience in electric power generation, electrical & electronic control systems, or electrical power distribution systems)
- Understanding NPI processes
- Incumbents must have demonstrated excellent analytical skills and have an extensive understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications.
- Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.
- Basic understanding of generator applications
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
- BS, or MS in Electrical Engineering
- Understanding of AC and DC Electrical systems
- Experience with Technical writing (product manuals)
- Computer networking and communications practices (Ethernet, Modbus, etc.)
- Experience with product safety, conformance, and certification (ex. UL, ISO, NEC)
- Familiarity with electrical codes and grid codes (ex. IEEE1547, European grid codes)
- Strong computer skills
- Familiarity with different controls competitors
- Cat Engineering Standards
- Ability to understand system design
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience working in a fast paced globally located team
Mossville, IL, Alpharetta, GA and Griffin, GA are the preferred locations but additional locations near other Caterpillar facilities may be considered.
