We are seeking an experienced conversational designer with a proven history of applying user-centered design to voice- and text-based conversational products (e.g., Chatbots, Alexa skills, Google Voice actions, etc.). This person will help grow the conversational UX service offerings for the User Experience Design Studio (UXDS) team.
Working with project teams to produce product design ideas will be part of this role. This person will also work with leadership to scope, strategize and manage conversational design projects. This includes prioritizing work across multiple projects.
The successful candidate will have a background in human-computer interaction, linguistics, or communication, with knowledge of user-centered design. Experience in end-to-end implementation of voice- and text-based conversational UIs is desired.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create compelling and effective designs for conversational user interfaces
  • Document design concepts in conversational flows, wireframes, input/output lists, interactive prototypes, and other artifacts
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team during ideation, design and development, including product managers, visual designers, content specialists, business stakeholders, and developers
  • Consult with the team throughout development and rollout to ensure designs are understood, implemented, and communicated effectively
  • Advocate for the user to influence and improve design decisions
  • Manage the development of conversational user interface design patterns and other reusable assets to aid efficient and effective user experience design
  • Promote and conduct research (user research and technology research) to inform conversational product design and development; monitor industry, technology and competitive trends to identify opportunities for applying improvements
  • Provide expertise and mentoring to team members and stakeholders
  • Promote conversational design and technologies to the broader organization

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in design, usability or UX research
  • Experience as a conversational designer, chatbot or VUI developer
  • Experience with delivering enterprise-level software applications
  • Experience leading project teams
  • Demonstrated experience delivering quality user interface design
  • Ability to analyze user and business needs to produce logical conversational flows


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in design, human factors, human-computer interaction, linguistics, cognitive psychology, computational linguistics, computer science, or related field
  • Experience working with teams using Agile methodologies
  • Health care industry experience
  • Knowledge and application of accessibility guidelines in web design (Section 508, WAI, WCAG)
  • Understanding of user-centered design methodology and human factors principles
  • Positive attitude with interest in learning new technology and skills
  • High level of customer focus and consulting skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team and internal clients as well as the ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively
  • Ability to sell ideas with solid negotiation and soft skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English)
  • Proven organizational and relationship-building skills

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $97,300 to $176,900. The salary range for Connecticut / Nevada residents is $97,300 to $176,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
