Job Description

Every single print edition of The Washington Post relies on an appropriate-and effective-balance between engaging stories and effective advertising. As our "Publication Design Specialist" your responsibility will be to help coordinate and plan out the newspaper with this important balance in mind. You'll work together with our Production and Advertising departments, as well as our award-winning Newsroom team, to satisfy advertiser space requests, determine our paper's daily page count and section size, uncover optimal placement positions that satisfy the paper's color needs, and more. It's an exciting, critical position that will bring out your inner problem-solver-and ensure our millions of readers get the best possible experience from their papers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Determine page count and section size of the daily newspaper
  • Use client/server-based layout application and our advertising systems to layout the newspaper, determining positions for scheduled advertising as well as newshole configuration
  • Work with our News, Production, and Advertising departments to find the optimal positions to satisfy various color needs
  • Work closely with the Newsroom to accommodate newshole configuration, including responding to requests for movement of ads
  • Use of a client/server-based application to create and update paginated page plans for multiple products, (with varying editions and zones)
  • Work with the Advertising department to satisfy advertiser position/space requests
  • Control newsprint costs through effective booking of the newspaper
  • Work collaboratively with a small work force, sharing responsibility and decision-making


Requirements include:

  • Excellent performance track record
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player within small work group; willing to share responsibilities and to be held accountable
  • Excellent communication skills are a must
  • Ability to make good decisions while weighing the (potentially competing) needs of our News, Production, and Advertising departments
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment that includes communications with multiple departments
  • Knowledgeable of press layout is a plus
  • Attention to detail is a must
  • Must be flexible and dependable in working night, day, and/or weekend schedule
