Product Design Director

We are currently seeking a Director-level individual contributor designer to join our Creative Technology team. We are looking for an expert practitioner and established leader focused on both strategic vision and execution for impact at scale. This practitioner has a proven track record of solving complex design problems, nimbly jumping into projects with other designers and influencing direction through their design work, and designing systemically in a way that guides other designers and allows them to build on their solutions.
You will be a key member of the Creative Technology team in the Card & Bank Design organization. This team looks at how our customer-facing technology, systems, and experiences need to evolve in accordance with consumer needs and expectations, advances in technology, and innovations in how users interact with software. We are a horizontal function that is equal parts incubation and integration. When we integrate with other portfolio teams to work on high-priority problem spaces, we need designers who can lead or jump into design sprints, establish a contextual footing, employ a rigorous design process, and help the team develop elegant design solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leads design activities at the portfolio level, by identifying unique opportunities to apply skills to deliver business value
- Strategically applies design skills to key initiatives, and engages with multiple portfolios of work
- Creates and coordinates integrated solutions and systems for scale
- Develops initiative design direction and plans design activities against a rigorous, thoughtful, and contextual implementation of the design process
- Models individual contributor design leadership, mentors other designers exploring the same track
- Collaborates with Product, Design, Data, and Engineering leadership, to ensure we're creating integrated solutions
- Reframes problems to help partners gain new insight and builds support for new ideas that impact the business
- Proactively solves challenges at the portfolio level through a practical and flexible approach
- Creates partnerships across design disciplines and portfolios to avoid duplication and integrate experiences for customers
- Advocates for skills required for the product and portfolio
- Assesses candidates' skillsets (all levels) across Experience Design
- Actively participates in internal and external recruiting efforts
What we're looking for:
- Track record of quickly ramping up and creating durable design solutions on product design projects for successful and widely respected customer experiences and/or services
- Demonstrated ability to strategically influence and build consensus among senior leadership through principled design storytelling
- Demonstrated understanding of UI development and creating requirements for engineering teams, ability to work alongside engineers to deliver high-quality user interfaces
- Deep understanding of end user needs backed by experience designing products and services that meet those needs
- Ability to be involved in cross-LOB collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
- Strong communicator of design direction with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization
- Experience leading concept-to-deliver design projects
- Highly collaborative, energetic and results-oriented, working hands-on in a fast-paced software development environment
- Ability to connect analytical data with practical solutions in a real-world environment
- Demonstrated ability to employ judgment and experience to make rapid and complex decisions
- A critical eye for exceptional design quality, and effective practices in delivering design critique across multiple teams
- Exceptional planning and execution skills
- Deep curiosity and experience with market research to understand industry trends and best-in-class experiences
- Passion to change the world through one's work
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or military experience
- At least 10 years of experience in UX/UI design, product design, or experience design
Preferred Qualifications:
- MBA or Masters degree
- Prior experience in designing and/or evolving design systems
- A great listener and a crisp communicator, with strong business judgment and analytical skills
- The ability to thrive within ambiguity, assess and synthesize complexity, and still find the north star that brings clarity and drives forward momentum
- The desire to collaborate, learn and continue to evolve the team
- Humility, judgment, and enthusiasm that creates great results AND a great culture
- Experience navigating a complex and highly regulated ecosystem
- Deep experience in early stage discovery or exploration efforts along with scaled execution approaches and methodologies
- Prior experience designing customer experiences and platform experiences across device types and viewports, including web and native mobile (iOS & Android) experiences
- A track record of envisioning, designing, and delivering successful customer experiences
