WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for a process-driven product designer who values collaboration and inspiring creative minds above individual success. With this approach the capabilities' designer will create the platform opportunities for future Nike only technologies that will inspire and lead to creation of ground breaking performance and lifestyle products for years to come. This candidate must be exceptionally inventive to imagine and create unseen expression and unfelt sensations from emerging technologies that do not exist yet. Drive footwear capabilities through the connection of design, development and manufacturing, elevating the athlete* experience through superior product craft. They must be able to connect foresight, intuition and the needs of the business to spark new ideas for the next generation of Nike footwear platforms.

As our NXT Capabilities Designer, you'll produce innovative footwear designs for Nike's Innovation Capabilities team and contribute to the creation of a Platform footwear line from concept to creation under the direction of our Innovation Leaders. Your focus will be on designing and envisioning technical manufacturing and material capabilities to footwear, driving material and manufacturing innovation excellence to invent the manufacturing capabilities of tomorrow; through the connection of innovation design, development, and advanced manufacturing.

The role involves creating new practices, processes and design applications to increase product value and performance. In addition, you'll use your knowledge of athletes* and cultures to improve product performance and appearance.
WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON
If this is you, you'll be working with NXT FTW across Cushioning, Engineered Textiles, Materials and Engineering and Manufacturing to create the future for Nike's Air, Flyknit and Foam platforms and emerging technologies delivering future platforms. You will create bigger bolder deeper footwear platforms and work in concert with technical and engineering experts to bring new & next level fit and ride experiences to life, the benefits of which will be proven through science and validated by the athletes*.

In this role you will articulate the edges of new technologies that deliver on the "unseen and unfelt". You will develop technologies for footwear platforms rooted in athlete*-desired performance benefits and in alignment with Nike footwear's long term business strategies.

As Capabilities Designer you will proactively follow the execution of all product details, including construction, color, form, style, detail, fit, performance and cost/value requirements; produce and present materials that effectively communicate the category consumers, product concepts and creative strategy to internal and external audiences; and actively seek expert input to develop appropriate designs with regard to cost/value, fit and performance, manufacturability, sustainability and aesthetic finish.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
In this role within NXT, you will be part of the Footwear team and report to the Capabilities Creative Director. You will partner across multiple NXT FW functions including Cushioning Innovation, Engineered Textiles, Materials Innovation, Athlete Concepts and Footwear Design. You will be a positive influence on the team and work to galvanize a cross functional team to engage the group genius.

As a member of the team you will act as a creative catalyst for the cross functional team. You will be a self starter and exhibit strong entrepreneurial spirit. As we are inventing the future, In this role you must be flexible and work effectively in ambiguous situations.

You will also collaborate with organizations within NXT including the Nike Sports Research Lab, NXT Design, Materials Design and Computational design and NXT Digital, to create innovative product designs that appeal to targeted athletes* and advance Nike's design advantage and product performance. You will also partner with Inline design teams and Consumer Insights frequently in intensive creative sprints.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design or combination of relevant education, experience, and training
  • 4+ years' experience designing and developing footwear products
  • Curious, creative and strategic with ability to develop product solutions.
  • Knowledge of color, textures, materials, human factors and form related to designing excellent products
  • Experience applying design approaches, methods and tools to solve complex product creation problems with multidisciplinary teams
  • Comprehensive understanding of footwear materials manufacturing and eagerness to acquire & implement education around design
  • Sound judgment, knowledge and passion for product and digital innovation and value of consumer insights to create the future
  • Passion for performance excellence
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including meeting facilitation and presentations
  • Previous footwear design / Textile design experience preferred
  • PhotoShop & Illustrator skills
  • Experience & Skills with 3D design & modeling programs
  • Makes decisions within the guidelines and policies that impact own priorities and allocation of time to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lead design initiatives and project teams, to conceive and create new ideas, generate consensus, and work cooperatively
  • Manages projects with moderate risk and complexity.
  • Collaborator with a desire to make a difference
