Grammarly offers a remote-first hybrid working model. Team members can work primarily remotely. Teams will meet in person every quarter in one of Grammarly’s hubs, currently in San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, and Kyiv. To ensure that teams are able to overlap in their working hours and to meet face-to-face when needed, all team members need to live within three time zones of their direct team.

Grammarly team members who will be collaborating at our San Francisco hub must be based in the United States.

The opportunity

Grammarly empowers people to thrive and connect, whenever and wherever they communicate. Every day, 30 million people and 30,000 teams around the world use our AI-powered writing assistant. All of this begins with our team collaborating in a values-driven and learning-oriented environment.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we are looking for a Mixed-Methods User Researcher to join our User Research team. As one of the leading members of our User Research team, this role will be responsible for defining and developing our mixed-methods user research practice within Grammarly. The Mixed-Methods User Researcher will be responsible for building robust survey intelligence at our company, crafting in-product survey channels, developing UX and experience metrics, and conducting segmentation modeling. This role will also take part in leading comprehensive qualitative studies and creating rich insights through the ability to combine attitudinal and behavioral data across the company. As our mixed-methods user research expert, this individual will also help define core design and user research experiments with our Product team and partner closely with our Data Science team.

The role is ideal for someone with a strong background in quantitative methods, experience conducting survey analysis, and a desire to understand the “why” behind data. The ideal candidate is comfortable with qualitative research and recognizes opportunities when to best utilize quantitative or qualitative research methods. This individual would also be interested in engaging deeply in work execution and in shaping the broader user research function across Grammarly. This position will report to the Head of User Research.

Your impact

As Mixed-Methods User Researcher, you will be one of the founding members of our User Research group at Grammarly, with the opportunity to accelerate the organization’s learning of our users, and connect self-reported data with behavioral and experimental data in our product. You will take part in defining the direction of new language technologies to improve communication for students and professionals across industries. You will learn to shape and embed user insights in a new product organization and partner closely with leaders in Product, Data Science, and Design.

In this role, you will:

  • Define and develop our mixed-methods/quantitative user research practice to help inform product strategy, research capabilities, and company offerings.
  • Develop research plans and conduct user research studies with clearly stated goals and research questions.
  • Lead the team in fostering a deep understanding of our customers and their communication needs to influence and shape our Grammarly product offerings.
  • Design and conduct quantitative research, such as in-app and external surveys, and feature prioritization surveys (i.e., Kano surveys); create models to understand user characteristics; and produce comprehensive research reporting.
  • Design and conduct qualitative research, such as user interviews, longitudinal studies, and usability studies.
  • Conduct research-brainstorming workshops with cross-functional teams to help identify research needs and opportunities to drive strategic work in the product-development process.
  • Connect and identify internal and external data points across the company to provide a holistic understanding of our users for our company.
  • Synthesize and communicate research findings to advise product decisions through rich storytelling, such as presentations, reports, workshops, or any other novel, creative approaches that you invent
  • Explore and be creative in developing research methods on the topic of communication and writing.
  • Participate in building the user research practice at Grammarly through hiring, mentoring, and building or selecting research tools and resources.

We’re looking for someone who

  • Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
  • Has a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience within User Experience, human-computer interaction, market research, social science, an applied research setting, or product research, and development.
  • Is a self-starter, efficient, and able to drive projects from beginning to end.
  • Is able to execute research to help identify user needs, problems, and opportunities, and has some level of familiarity with such research tools as user personas and journey map creation.
  • Has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and effectively articulates their ideas, research plans, and findings.
  • Is relentlessly focused on our customers’ needs and wants.
  • Is eager to collaborate with cross-functional teams and define new ways of learning.
  • Is proactive in seeking and providing opportunities to improve and expand the team, including team members’ personal skills and experiences.
  • Has a comfortable working knowledge of statistics.
  • Has experience with statistical analysis packages (R, Stata, SPSS, etc.) for data manipulation and computational statistics.
  • Has experience with survey programming platforms (i.e., Qualtrics).
  • Has experience with qualitative research methods.
  • Has experience designing and analyzing experiments.

An Insider's view of Grammarly

What’s the vibe like in the office?

Our values actually represent our team. Discussions about ethical decision-making or tweeting empathetically are common at Grammarly, and I recognize how rare that is.

Celeste

Senior Content Strategy Manager

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

We resolve our problems with constructive discussions that are only made possible by the level of empathy and listening skills that team members have here. It makes me happy to know I work with such exceptional people.

Maryna

Engineering Manager

What is your vision for the company?

Writing helps us all achieve personal, professional, and academic success, but effective communication requires talent and time. It can be very challenging, and we may not always be able to effectively express our meaning, convey our intent, and be fully understood—creating a gap with our audience. We’re building Grammarly to close this gap.

Brad

CEO

What projects are you most excited about?

I always feel pumped when I see the positive feedback we get from our users. To know that your work is helping people discover a product that meaningfully improves their lives—it never gets old.

Shanik

Head of Growth
