Job Description

The Viasat Design Team us seeking a dedicated Lead Product Designer to join our growing design team and to lead the design work on a strategically important product.

In this role, you will explore the problem space and guide the team to research, conceptualize, and produce delightful customer experiences.

You will collaborate and coordinate with your product and engineering colleagues to make the best decisions for the product, demonstrating an understanding of how to balance the technical with the feasible and the desirable.

Job Responsibilities

  • Influence and lead design thinking across the business
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Engineering, and Sales & Marketing teams
  • Conceptualize and iterate original ideas that bring simplicity and userfriendliness to complex design problems.
  • Guide, support, and balance team recommendations with research, analytics, usability testing, customer insights, and other quantitative/qualitative insights as appropriate to advance ideas
  • Act as the user advocate during the product development process, present and articulate the rationale for design decisions and key results to the team and product partners with an ability to see the big picture whilst maintaining careful attention to detail.
  • Research interaction, design standards, and technology trends. Evaluate competitors and other related products to ensure that our products and services adhere to best-of-breed usability and user experience standards in the market.
  • Lead UX Research, Design Workshops, Defining Design briefs, Storyboarding, high & low fidelity prototyping.
  • Lead and prioritize projects and scope and plan design activities and outputs within the team.


Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience crafting outstanding digital products
  • A Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Digital Media, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive Science or related field - or commensurate work experience.
  • Strong portfolio outlining ideation process, design thinking, interaction, and visual design across a wide range of user experiences
  • You will need a detailed understanding of the agile software lifecycle and the ability to communicate and engage with frontend and backend engineering teams to iterate and achieve the best solutions.
  • Experience and understanding of the entire product development process, from problem-solving through to detailed interaction and visual design
  • The ability to think and design in terms of systems not just interface elements Be able to create high-fidelity mockups of your designs using Figma, Sketch, etc.
  • Be able to create prototypes using any tool like Framer, Principle, HTML/CSS/JS, etc.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with Design, Product, Sales, Marketing and agile Software Development teams.
  • Always be focused on delivery, know when to, and understand how to compromise to achieve forward progress
  • Always be focused on quality, know when to stand your ground to ensure the best possible user experience
  • Leadership and self-management - Be willing to take charge of situations and drive forward solutions


Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Master's Degree in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive science, Information Design, Industrial Design, Product Design or related field
  • Experience in recruiting and hiring as well as managing designers
  • Project management experience, orchestration of work

At Viasat, we consider many factors when it comes to compensation, including the scope of the position as well as your background and experience. For Colorado-based jobs only: The minimum for this position is $142,650 annually; however, base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional cash or stock incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
