As a Design Engineer in the Tracked Products Electrical Installation team, you will be joining an innovative team responsible for integrating electrical and electronic systems into Caterpillar’s Dozers, Hydraulic Mining Shovels and Surface Rock Drills. You will have the unique opportunity to direct and contribute to the concept, development, and design of harnesses, power cables and installations for systems from 24 VDC to 7200 VAC. The Electrical Installation team is part of the Tracked Products organization and is responsible for end to end design and development of key machine systems for multiple Caterpillar applications. You will have the opportunity to strengthen your design skills, analytical skills, and mastery of mechanical and electrical engineering concepts. You will partner with other members of the design team as well as provide technical guidance to global team members. You will contribute to the planning and delivery of projects focused on heavy construction, surface mining, and quarry applications. You will have the opportunity to work with and learn from a highly experienced team of engineers having significant experience across Caterpillar machine systems.
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Create and refine designs in the development of wiring harnesses, power cables and the installation of related components for electrical and electronic systems on mobile machinery.
Utilize Creo to create highly integrated designs within the machine platforms
Collaborate with suppliers, global manufacturing facilities, engineering system teams and the core product groups to minimize total cost of ownership.
Review CAD models, layouts, assemblies, detailed part drawings, and bills-of-material for accuracy and conformance to specifications and Caterpillar Engineering Standards
Utilize design tools to optimize designs for manufacturing, service support, cost, and quality.
Manage New Product Introduction (NPI) deliverables including, product cost targets, product reliability goals, and drawing release quality.
Working effectively with a global team to deliver program objectives
Support Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) by modifying designs to address Product Support and Manufacturing feedback.
Support activities in the factory and field including fit ups, root cause investigations and basic electrical troubleshooting
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science with 3+ years job related experience, or Masters degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science with 1+ year job related experience, or Doctorate degree in Engineering.
Top candidates will also have:
Basic understanding of mechanical design concepts
Basic understanding of electrical systems including reading schematics
Experience troubleshooting electrical systems
Design, analysis, or test experience on wiring installations or electrical systems
Demonstrated strong commitment to Caterpillar product development
Demonstrated strong Caterpillar Values through teamwork and collaboration skills
Experience with NPI, CPI, APQP, Cost, and Teamcenter tools/process
Strong verbal and written communication skills
High level of proficiency in Creo or other modeling tools
Knowledge of harness and cable manufacturing
Experience collaborating with global engineering teams
Hands-on experience (e.g. machinery, heavy equipment, manufacturing processes, wiring, etc.)
Experience with medium voltage systems (120 – 7200 V AC)
Additional information:
Domestic relocation is available for this position.
Occasional travel to suppliers, dealers and customer sites is required (less than 10%)
