The Availability and Accuracy team under Item & Inventory within Walmart Global Tech is hiring for a Staff Data Scientist to lead the development and design of the complex algorithms and machine learning models that power our robust tools and api's. The successful hire will balance strong research skills with solid statistical knowledge and relevant experience / expertise from industry best practices to support our pioneering work.
In this role, you will:

  • Work independently to research, design, develop, and deploy data driven algorithmic solutions, both statistical and machine learning, to execute demand forecasting for hundreds of millions of item-store combinations on a weekly basis.
  • Implement model solutions and study the results on test datasets in order to understand their shortcomings and problems.
  • Design new approaches that address any shortcomings.
  • Implement computationally scalable algorithms of statistical models that run quickly on large datasets.
  • Deploy models into production and create algorithms that are fast and robust.
  • Utilize advanced machine learning and statistics tool sets to define new problems and improve demand forecasting predictive models.
  • Engage in data analysis using advanced statistical algorithms to identify potential opportunities to improve existing algorithms.
  • Respond to user-initiated, forecast-related model quality and prediction related issues as needed.
  • Work closely with the engineering team on the implementation and deployment of feature engineering, forecasting, modeling, and implementing and deploying algorithms in a cloud environment.
  • Keep up to date with current research and best practices on demand forecasting techniques and other advanced forecasting techniques. predictive and ensemble methods.


We are looking for:

  • Ph.D. degree or the equivalent in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and two years of experience in an analytics related field;
  • OR Master's degree or the equivalent in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and four years of experience in an analytics related field;
  • OR Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and seven years of experience in an analytics related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and machine learning.
  • Experience coding in at least one of the following: Python, R, Scala, or C++.
  • Experience with the statistical programming language R Spark is desirable.
  • Experience developing machine learning and statistical algorithms.
  • Experience scripting with SQL.
  • Experience with data modelling, time series analysis, and tree-based regression models.
  • Experience building and testing models and tuning multi-stage models and model ensembles to assess their accuracy, fit, validity, and robustness.
  • Experience with open-source data analysis and machine learning libraries, for example, Pandas, Numpy, and Scikit-learn, or the R package environment.
  • Experience compiling, analyzing, and visualizing data by applying the following mathematical models and statistical techniques: Regression Analysis, Resampling, and Decision Trees.
  • Experience with GPU-based algorithms is desirable.
