Technical Business Analyst
About The Role
The transportation industry has no shortage of complex problems requiring creative solutions to scale efficiently. In this role, you will work closely with our cloud engineering, database and security teams to deliver best in class software to address those industry problems.
As a Technical Business Analyst for the IT Operations and Security Group, your role will be to work in between the business and the engineering teams to help bring technical requirements to life. To support this, the Technical Business Analyst will understand and break down the requirements and needs into technical work, documenting the requirements and path into tickets and grouped logically for the engineering team to execute on. This role will also be responsible for writing a technical specification based on discovery and definition for cloud engineering initiatives, providing thoughtful leadership, and familiarity with proven cloud solutions that support our strategy and objectives.
To succeed in this role, the backlog and requirements that drive our work breakdown should be put together in a way that the team can see high level business needs and individual breakdowns of technology requirements from data, to API, to cloud computing requirements and any necessary path to achieve success. This will require a technical understanding of the technical stack, impact of changes, and necessary flow of information to achieve the output goals.
Responsibilities
In your first month you can expect to:
- Understand the Cloud Engineering program roadmap and start partnering on requirement gathering with a Project Manager
- Work with cloud infrastructure and engineering teams to create requirements around key initiatives and help prioritize the backlog based on these requirements
- Participate in existing meetings that include Standups, Weekly Kanban Planning and Retrospectives
- Create and manage documentation and reports for work breakdown through our systems (i.e. Aha, Smartsheet, Jira)
- Participate in converting business requirements into executable Jira Initiatives, Epics, and Stories
- Support documentation of our infrastructure stack, including architecture, data flow, and auditing
In your first 90 days you can expect to
- Start gathering requirements, acceptance criteria, definition of done for new initiatives on your own
- Collaborate with stakeholders and leaders in the department and organization to translate strategy into prioritized requirements and solutions
- Guide team on effective backlog management and help create backlog items when needed
- Lead design sessions to drive value, alignment, and small-scale experimentation to determine viability of planned work
- Teach teams how to estimate and ensure backlog items are estimated prior to Weekly Planning
- Review and audit business requirements to technical design and configurations
In the first 120 days you can expect to:
- Develop an understanding of Mastery's users and act as an advocate for their needs
- Perform research and interviews to determine IT business requirements and then translate such into specifications for technical projects
- Analyze complex ideas or proposals and build a range of meaningful recommendations for future work on our roadmap
- Use multiple sources of information including broader stakeholder views to develop solutions and recommendations
- Use data and insights to inform conclusions and support decision-making and develop a point of view on key trends, and how they impact clients
- Identify and address patterns in infrastructure and applications that can be solved with a common solution
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in business analysis discipline
- Demonstrated experience writing user stories in support of Agile software development
- Basic understanding of Cloud Hosting OpenStack Software components including, Docker, Kubernetes, Node.js, MongoDB
- Good understanding of software development life cycle & associated tools such as Jira and GitHub
- Process Flow Analysis experience while also synthesizing architecture and design best practices
- Ability to discuss experience with cloud software solutions such as containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and IaC through Terraform
- Base understanding of cloud services and infrastructure (VPC, EC2, S3, EBS, EFS, SG, NACL)
- Enjoy working with a large variety of services and technologies
- Strong communication and meeting facilitation skills
- Ability to learn quickly and think creatively
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Exceptional research and reporting skills
Preferred Qualifications
- IIBA Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP), IIBA Agile Analysis Certification (AAC), IREB Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering (CPRE) or a comparable certification
- Jira, Aha, Smartsheet experience is a plus
- Enjoy looking through metrics and logs as if it were a treasure hunt to help drive experiments on recently deployed solutions
- Project Management or Agile certification a plus
- Technical Background / Degree Program preferred
- Experience in logistics industry a plus
