Positions in this function are responsible for the management and manipulation of mostly structured data, with a focus on building business intelligence tools, conducting analysis to distinguish patterns and recognize trends, performing normalization operations and assuring data quality. Depending on the specific role and business line, example responsibilities in this function could include creating specifications to bring data into a common structure, creating product specifications and models, developing data solutions to support analyses, performing analysis, interpreting results, developing actionable insights and presenting recommendations for use across the company. Roles in this function could partner with stakeholders to understand data requirements and develop tools and models such as segmentation, dashboards, data visualizations, decision aids and business case analysis to support the organization. Other roles involved could include producing and managing the delivery of activity and value analytics to external stakeholders and clients. Team members will typically use business intelligence, data visualization, query, analytic and statistical software to build solutions, perform analysis and interpret data. Positions in this function work on predominately descriptive and regression-based analytics and tend to leverage subject matter expert views in the design of their analytics and algorithms. This function is not intended for employees performing the following work: production of standard or self-service operational reporting, casual inference led (healthcare analytics) or data pattern recognition (data science) analysis; and/or image or unstructured data analysis using sophisticated theoretical frameworks.
This is an exciting role in the growing Optum Care Services division within UnitedHealth Group. The ideal candidate is passionate about working with data and driven to deliver creative and compelling solutions and analytic results which turn data into actionable insights for our business. The prospective Senior Data Analyst will support the organization in identifying key trend components of the Care Services population, disease conditions, utilization, gap analysis, and assure data quality. This role requires analysis experience and ability to work with large data sets, interpret results, and develop clinical analytic outcomes highlighting the value of several Optum Care Services programs as well as answer key business questions to drive business strategy.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identify key trends in member demographics, disease prevalence, and utilization to support the creation of member specific strategies to ensure coding accuracy
  • Study APC level diagnostic patterns to identify opportunities for increased documentation accuracy
  • Support Care Services program growth through identification of new opportunities
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of project scope, data extraction methodology, logic and design of data cleaning, exploratory data analysis, and statistical methods
  • Works with less structured data, able to merge data from different sources and perform data scrubbing prior to analysis to show clinical outcomes highlighting program impact and value
  • Use business intelligence, data visualization, query, analytic and statistical software to build solutions, perform analysis and interpret data
  • Able to write and understand SQL/SAS queries to leverage existing standardized calculations of metrics and perform in depth statistical analysis and interpret data
  • Work effectively both as an individual analytic contributor and collaborator within the team

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of working knowledge of relational databases, database structures (SQL, Oracle, Teradata)
  • 3+ years of experience developing in business intelligence/visualization software (preferably Tableau or Power BI)
  • 3+ Healthcare Industry or related claims experience
  • Intermediate level of proficiency developing SAS/SQL queries
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare risk adjustment experience
  • Patient clinical management data experience
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only : The salary range for Colorado residents is $66,100 to $118,300. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada residents is $72,800 to $129,900.
