Senior/Lead Data Engineer
About the job
3Play Media is the leading software platform for making the web’s video content accessible - providing industry best captioning, transcription and audio description services. Our platform serves multiple user groups, including paying customers, contractors engaged in our gig-economy marketplace, and our operations team who keeps things running smoothly 24x7. Every day, our system processes hundreds of hours of video content and stores away the video, audio and transcription data in a variety of formats.
With this rapid data expansion (both relational and a large mongo instance) and the addition of several third party integrations, the Engineering team is looking to hire our first data engineer to tie it all together and make the data readily available to the entire company. This is a unique opportunity to get in early in a company’s data story where they already have a ton of product traction and an impressive customer list. If you’re interested in coming into a mostly greenfield data situation to help us lay our data foundation, we’d love to chat.
This position reports directly to the VP of Engineering.
You will:
- Design an end-to-end data platform, connecting all of 3Play’s data
- Identify data needs across the company (App teams, Data Science and the business) and connect the pipes to make the data readily available
- Establish best practices for how consumers (Looker, Data Science team) access the warehouse data as to minimize coupling (views, marts)
- Work closely with the VP of Engineering on defining processes for how the company requests and thinks about data.
We’re looking for someone who has:
- 5+ years of experience in an Data Engineering (or Analytics Engineering) role, ideally designing and managing a data warehouse
- A strong engineering background with strong SQL skills and knowledge of Python, Java or Ruby
- Seen what “great” looks like for a data warehouse/pipelines and is excited to build that from the ground up
- A strong bias for simplicity and establishing good patterns
- The ability to work independently across many groups and be a driver of change
- Experience working with many flavors of data: SQL, no-SQL and 3rd party integrations
- Extensive experience using cloud BI tools (preferably Looker)
- [Bonus] Hands on experience with data modeling for warehouse applications (Kimball, fact/dimension or similar modeling)
- [Bonus] Knowledge of transformation tools such as dbt, Dataform, Python Data Manipulation, Kinesis
Some things you might work on:
- Set up our first data warehouse - using Snowflake or another “Looker-friendly” technology
- Pull data from our app mysql and mongo databases into the warehouse using an ingestion tool like Fivetran or Stitch
- Pipe data from third party tools like Hubspot and Zendesk into the warehouse and join it with app data
- Set up machine learning data pipelines to feed our Data Science team’s research
