GDIT is searching for a Scientist to support research, diagnostics, and surveillance activities with the CDC in Atlanta GA. Specifically his position is to perform scientific research work to investigate human immune responses to seasonal and animal influenza viruses in order to develop influenza vaccine strategies, evaluate the pandemic potential of novel influenza viruses. The incumbent will participate in the basic and applied research in unexplored areas related to the evaluation of human immune response to influenza vaccination and infection.

This position requires the incumbent to work in Biosafety level (BSL)-2, BSL-2 Enhanced, and BSL-3 Enhanced laboratories ,training may be available to a candidate who meets all other requirements.

The ideal candidates will have a working knowledge of compliance with industry standards and best practices for working in a regulated laboratory and specifically BSL-2 and possibly BSL-3 High Containment facility. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. The position is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations on influenza immunity to both human seasonal viruses and animal influenza viruses (avian and swine) with pandemic potential.
  • Evaluate antibody responses to a variety of avian, swine and other novel influenza viruses
  • Perform immunological analysis to investigate the correlate of protection for influenza.
  • Participate in influenza vaccine strain selection by evaluating human antibody responses to newly emerged seasonal influenza viruses and investigate the immune response to influenza virus infection and vaccination.
  • Independently develop, execute, troubleshoot serological assays to support ongoing studies in the team, with excellent oral and written communication skills to present and share scientific findings.
  • Support outbreak response and other activities as needed.
  • Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, manuscript and other documents as assigned.
  • Participate in special projects and activities and assume responsibilities as assigned.



Required Skills and Experience

  • Ph.D. in biological science, virology, immunology or related fields
  • 5 plus years of experience
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting immunological and virological studies
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of statistical analysis using Prism, SAS and other statistical analysis tools.



Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience in conducting virological and immunological assays is highly preferred, including ELISA, virus neutralization assays, flow cytometry analysis.
  • Experience in performing studies in BSL2E, and BSL3 laboratories and working with select agents is highly preferred but not required.
