Job Description:
We're looking for a Senior Research Scientist to join the newly-formed Developer Insights Lab at Flow. This lab will produce exciting research in topics such as Developer Experience, Developer Learning, and Developer Satisfaction that support Flow's mission to benefit developers at work.
We want to change how tech sees, values, and invests in developers and their success. To achieve this, we are building a research agenda that seeks out far-reaching, meaningful questions about how developers collaborate, create, and thrive. Researchers will partner with colleagues in areas such as Design, Product, and Engineering to identify important questions. Researchers will design, run, and publish mixed-methods research studies that reach an external audience in tech, growing our understanding of how to help developers thrive.
This role is a great fit for an impact-driven person who cares about putting research into the hands of people who will use it, who is motivated and passionate about the future of developer teams, and who is looking for a place where applied research expertise and evidence science skills can shine. This is an opportunity to join a foundational team in a growing research area, with colleagues who care deeply about the impact of research!
We are looking for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods researchers. Ideal candidates may have a core set of qual or quant skills but should have experience collaborating on mixed-methods projects, and be skilled at proactively choosing methods suitable to applied contexts.
What we're looking for:
6+ years experience completing rigorous end-to-end research projects (from design through communication). We are especially interested in expertise in behavioral social sciences, including crafting and evaluating new methodologies, recruiting participants, creating and upholding ethical principles in research, and statistical analysis or in-depth qualitative analysis. As an expert research practitioner, you likely have a PhD in a field like Psychology, Cognitive Science, HCI, Information Science, Computer Science, or may have significant applied research experience. You share our dedication to building a learning culture, supporting the growth of teammates, and fostering vibrant research. We also value:

  • Experience with or domain expertise in developer teams, developer workflows, developer tools, or related topics. Ideally, you'll bring subject matter expertise in a topic that relates to our research agenda, such as software engineering team research, developer learning, developer productivity, developer satisfaction.
  • Dedication to equity in measurement, ethical research, and strong ability to craft psychologically safe, inclusive research which developers can trust and benefit from.
  • High skill at evidence-based reasoning with human behavior as it impacts our research questions. Your technical skills may be quantitative or qualitative, but you understand how to evaluate and choose research methods in the real world and can be an insightful voice for these choices. You think deeply about trade-offs in research and about operationalization and generalizability. You have experience dealing with complexity in measurement, and value educating and communicating on this to others.
  • For quantitative researchers, proficiency in R for statistical analysis & SQL. More important than specific tools is experience with research design and decisions such as data cleaning, data analysis, data extraction, performing statistical analysis, and generally working to transform large datasets into useful sources of insight for research questions. For qualitative researchers, proficiency in qualitative methods such as interviews, thematic analysis, trace measures, focus groups, participant observations. Expertise in community-based methods, longitudinal measures and causal inference with observational data is a plus.

We don't expect any candidate to match everything in this job description. Please feel encouraged to apply if you believe you are a strong fit. We seek to build a supportive culture for research that amplifies important perspectives in tech, and that includes recognizing diverse research areas, fields and experiences.
We are an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.
