Senior Database Engineers are responsible for the implementation and maintenance of Oracle databases and related servers, including backups, monitoring, performance and availability tuning, production deployments and capacity planning.

In addition, DBAs are responsible for planning, architecture and implementation of database requirements for all manner of IT projects, and the ongoing support thereof

Oracle

Note: recent experience required with all listed technologies.

  • Experience with Oracle DatabaseandClusterware versions 10g, 11g, 12c, 19c
  • 10+ years of oracle DBA experience
  • 6+ years RAC experience with multiple clusters in multiple data centers
  • 8+ years GoldenGate experience
  • 5+ years DataGuard experience
  • deep experience and understanding of Oracle internals (how and why)
  • broad experience with all Oracle DBA fundamental skills: rman/backups, restores, DataGuard,
  • strong SQL and PLSQL skills


Code / automation

  • shell (ksh/bash) - 6+ years with significant complex systems created and in heavy use by users, such as DR or data center move or nonprod refresh automation
  • demonstrated aptitude and enthusiasm for automating manual tasks
  • experience with other languages like java, perl, .net (software dev/eng background preferred)
  • experience with automation / IAC tools: chef, ansible, puppet
  • demonstrated experience using IAC tools to automate Oracle tasks
  • demonstrated experience conceptualizing, designing, and implementing cost-saving automation/helper solutions alone, without requirements or a team
  • experience with calling APIs, REST and otherwise
  • experience with git, gitlab, runner


Data transport/ingest

  • experience integrating oracle data with the cloud, including GCP/BigQuery
  • experience with HVR, Striim or similar data replication products


Performance tuning

  • demonstrated extensive experience tuning SQL, both from the database backend as well as from a SQL tuning perspective
  • deep understanding of Oracle database internals, how and why the Oracle Optimizer works, and how to change its behavior
  • deep understanding of Oracle SQL Plan Management, Adaptive, and other tuning features
  • able to lead and mentor non-DBA resources in performance testing and tuning efforts
  • able to provide data/evidence-backed analyses of performance


Postgresql

  • demonstrated design, build, secure, maintenance of postgresql 9.6 and 12 clusters (standard open source)
  • standard DBA knowledge: backups, restores, (hot) standby, WAL
  • performance tuning


Other

  • experience with installing, troubleshooting, and supporting: rabbitmq, kafka, other database-adjacent tools
  • Provide on-call support in a 24x7 environment.


Infrastructure

  • see IAC tools in code section
  • demonstrated ability to act as linux root administrator and install and evaluate new products and tools
  • experience working with Engineering/SAN team, managing and forecasting storage usage, dealing with raw storage
  • experience evaluation new storage products including devising and executing performance tests


Architecture

  • strong experience evaluating new products and vendors, both within and outside of the database arena
  • strong experience performing technical evaluation and research resulting in documented and implemented best practices for new systems, with new systems installed, monitored, and stable
  • demonstrated ability to become a go-to person for all facets of the IT org


Soft skills

  • demonstrated technical team leadership (management experience a plus)
  • demonstrated training and mentoring of junior colleagues
  • demonstrated providing technical direction to junior colleagues
  • demonstrated providing technical advice and recommendation to leadership
  • ability to interact with VP and C-level leadership in both crisis and everyday situations
  • strong ability to forge and maintain relationships with other teams
  • strong demonstrated writing skills, especially in the areas of root cause analysis and post-mortem issue writeups
  • ability to lead under pressure, remotely, and in a First Response situation


Education

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in computer related field preferred
  • Oracle certification preferred.
