Responsible for the administration and maintenance of company proprietary and third party relational database systems. Maintains the backup and recovery of company relational database systems. Creates and maintains database related components in support of application teams such as: Warehouse, Finance, Application Development and Mainframe. Strong knowledge in a production environment with i nstalls of SQL Instances/SSRS/SSIS, Infrastructure setup, Migrations, Log Shipping, Replication, etc.

Required Knowledge:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, mathematics or related field or equivalent
  • Database architecture and administration including SQL Server
  • Software application development
  • 3-5 years related work experience


Preferred Knowledge:

  • DB2 administration
  • Programming languages such as Microsoft Visual Basic, C# or ASP
  • Network environments
  • Insurance coverages and rating schemes and insurance products
  • Company and department practices and procedures
  • Insurance industry and marketing techniques


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Acts as system administrator for the relational database systems utilized by company proprietary systems and third party systems. Installs and/or upgrades database software to maintain health of the database environments for various systems in the company. Establishes and maintains the security levels for individuals and groups within the company SQL Server and DB2 database installations.

30-35% Daily

Maintains backup and disaster recovery of company databases. Schedules regular full and incremental backups of databases as directed by management in concordance with company disaster recovery and business continuity practices and procedures. Maintains knowledge of database backups including size and frequency and recommends to management any changes to systems or procedures to maintain adequate database and system backups. Performs regular system recoveries to verify disaster recovery and business continuity preparedness. Recommends to management any changes to disaster recovery and business continuity practices and procedures.

15-20% Daily

Helps troubleshoot hardware and software problems related to relational database systems used in conjunction with third party and company proprietary systems. Work may be during working hours and after hours as required by urgency or nature of situation.

20-25% As Needed

Acts as database designer helping design, build, and implement new databases for company proprietary application development systems. Works with design teams to understand the business needs for new application development projects in order to design and implement database architectures that will achieve desired performance results for new development products. Conducts and/or directs testing within new development geared towards understanding, improving, and meeting project goals as they relate to database and product performance in new development projects. Communicates with team members on concepts, research, and testing results for new database design.

10-15% Daily

Monitors database performance of various company and third party proprietary systems in order to determine performance levels. Researches and recommends to management any changes deemed necessary in order to optimize database and system performance in various company systems.

10-15% Daily

Creates and maintains necessary documentation for company relational database systems such as system setup, database architecture and design, backup information and schedules, disaster recovery information, etc.

5-10% Daily

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs other duties as directed or as situation dictates such as participating in new software application design and development, evaluating internal Company processes, preparing coursework and conducting training for new employees.
