ABOUT THE ROLE

Instacart Data Scientists understand our customers and shoppers and continue to investigate and improve the experience with our product. It's about knowing which problems are critical to solve, and how much effort to invest in addressing them. You will be a trusted partner in uncovering barriers in the product’s usability and utilize these insights to inform product improvements that drive angle-changing growth.

ABOUT THE TEAM

We are the “thought partners” and problem solvers for the company, dedicated to making grocery shopping effortless for everyone and finding solutions to large-scale opportunities that will forever change the way people feed themselves and their loved ones. Our teams work at the intersection of data and decisions. Data Scientists at Instacart are embedded within product teams and serve as the data driven thought leaders. We are currently seeking experienced data scientists to support these areas of our business:

ABOUT THE JOB

As a Data Scientist at Instacart you will have many opportunities for ownership, impact, and work on exciting and complex challenges at scale.
You will have the opportunity to research and learn how complex phenomena unique to Instacart operate.
Our teams set KPIs and discuss metrics cross functionally with our Product and Engineering colleagues.
We have a rich experimentation and a/b testing culture.
This is a fast-paced and constantly changing environment. Sometimes our problems are ambiguous and you must be ready to solve them quickly, are they ok with that? Better yet...do they thrive on that?

ABOUT YOU

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

4+ years experience working in data-driven analytics/predictive analytics/statistical modeling/data mining
Ability to code in Python, R and write complex, efficient SQL queries to extract data
Experience with a/b testing and ability to run rigorous experiments to come up with scientifically sound recommendations
Good understanding of how to grow and shape data tools and datasets to improve data-driven decision making
Ability to thrive in an unstructured environment, working autonomously on a strong team to find opportunity and deliver business impact

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bonus points but not required, having worked on Search ranking, Ad-tech, Supply Chain, Risk or Fraud
Experience building ML models
PhD or MS in computer science, machine learning, statistics, physics
Interesting side projects or Kaggle competition results

Uniting colleagues through shared passions

Lancaster works with Instacart ERGS through his events-focused role. He also co-leads its LGBTQIA+ ERG, Rainbow Carrots. “We’ve made efforts towards allyship, inclusivity and amplifying intersectional voices of the LGBTQIA+ community,” he said. Pride Month events (themed “Community: Connectedness in our now Virtual World”) included a fundraiser for nonprofit Rainbow Railroad, a Gin and Gender class, and guest speakers.

My involvement with the Rainbow Carrots ERG has given me the opportunity to influence the voice of LGBTQIA+ community on a corporate level and educate others in meaningful ways — providing a list of actionable items that speak to the difference between advocacy and allyship.

A culture that is empowering for all

“I am passionate about empowering, mentoring and uplifting women in tech,” Guo said. A co-lead of Instacart’s largest ERG, Women@, she curated programming for Women’s History Month that included leadership talks and a “Rock Your Review” workshop. Additionally, she launched and leads the ERG’s engineering mentorship program aimed at sharpening participants’ technical skills and fueling career progression.

Many women and allies have mentored me throughout my career. I want to pay this mentorship forward and pass it on to the next generation of women in tech.
