The UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual (E&I) Affordability and Strategy team is responsible for operational effectiveness and performance of E&I medical cost strategies and the development and mobilization of transformational ideas into E&I business solutions.
The E&I Affordability Senior Data Analytics Consultant will perform critical research and investigation of key medical cost trends. As a subject matter expert, you will interpret and analyze data from various sources and recommend best approaches to mitigate trends. The successful candidate will execute strategic analytics and evaluation related to medical cost savings. The position will require collaborative work across the E&I Line of Business and key business partners across UnitedHealthcare, Optum and UnitedHealth Group.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partners with business owners or leaders to develop metrics, pull and analyze data, and execute on established analytical needs and strategies.
  • Collects, analyzes and performs quality assurance on analytic initiatives that consume data from multiple sources
  • Works with a variety of teams to identify areas of opportunity in order to drive financial and outcome performance of programs
  • Provides consistent and timely communication on projects, results and conclusions from analyses
  • Participates in the development of business strategy when necessary
  • Extracts, aggregates and performs quality checks on applicable data from multiple sources and tables for purposes of root cause analysis
  • Performs data analytics in support of medical expense trend identification, affordability program development and validation
  • Communicate results to relevant audiences and customers and incorporates results into financial forecasts, if applicable
  • Provides ongoing communications on project status, results, and conclusions from analyses

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Business, Health Administration, or related field or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years professional data analysis experience
  • 3+ years working in a health care setting, preferably in a managed healthcare company
  • Solid SAS and SQL programing experience, and proficiency in database applications
  • Experience working in/from a data warehouse environment
  • Data presentation skills, experience interacting and presenting to Executive Level Management team
  • Advanced capabilities with Microsoft Excel; proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cost reporting and/or claims payment review
  • Experience mining large data sets, familiarity with Big Data mining tools
  • Established ability to manage multiple initiatives, shifting back and forth effectively among activities, to produce positive results in a dynamic environment
  • Problem solving skills, including the ability to work independently and systematically analyze complex problems, draw relevant conclusions, and successfully devise/implement solutions calmly and effectively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $90,500 to $161,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
