Life at MX

If you thrive in a challenging work environment, surrounded by incredible team members who will help you grow, MX is the right place for you.

Come build with us and be part of an award-winning company that's helping create meaningful and lasting change in the financial industry.

The data science team at MX is focused on solving the company's most computationally and analytically complex problems using statistical and machine learning methods. The work is challenging, engaging, and directly influences MX's portfolio of products and services. If you're keen to conduct careful analyses focused on core business problems and consumer financial behavior in a fast-paced, intellectually engaging environment, you'll enjoy working at MX as a Senior Data Analyst (Data Science).

As a Senior Data Analyst within the Data Science function, you'll partner with our data scientists to lead a variety of analytic activities, including project-based data mining, operational test design, data stratification and quality control, dashboard and KPI development, and machine learning model development. As a talented "data wrangler", you'll leverage your analytic skills to discover new correlations and predictive relationships using MX's expanding, world-class data asset. Never content, you'll also look for ways to expand your analytic toolbox through side-by-side training and self-directed study. The ability to turn analytic results into digestible and engaging stories will be important for success, as will patience in the face of analytic uncertainty. Your strong computational training and background, collaborative spirit, and hands-on approach to solving problems will mark you as an ideal candidate for this role.

As part of MX's thriving analytic organization, you'll enjoy autonomy and the ability to make a real difference in a successful and high-growth company. As you collaborate with other creative and enthusiastic team members you'll be rewarded and recognized for your high-caliber work. MX's values are central to the company's success, and you'll live them by questioning assumptions and taking initiative, advancing our data-driven approach to solving problems, and showing empathy and a commitment to radical honesty in equal measure.

What you'll get to do
  • Work with data scientists to design or uncover new tools, methods, and approaches to strengthen MX's data science platform, execute A/B and multivariate tests, and build predictive models focused on consumer financial behavior
  • Write scripts to support hypothesis-based and theory-free data mining projects (e.g., create new pattern recognition algorithms and find hidden relationships between features)
  • Create new data assets, modeling features, and dashboards in service to MX's core data engine
  • Monitor data platform system performance to identify and address challenges to data quality (e.g., accuracy, completeness, and reliability) and availability
  • Lead data exploration work to generate insights on product effectiveness, institutional client results, and end-user (consumer) financial health
  • Develop presentations and memoranda to communicate key messages and findings to colleagues and senior leaders, including data-driven narratives aimed at external constituencies (in collaboration with Marketing)
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on analytical best practices and data visualization

You'll do it using your
  • Bachelor's degree, likely including quantitative coursework (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science, or similar)
  • 4-6 years' experience designing and executing business analyses (e.g., asset pricing, cash flow forecasting, customer satisfaction/engagement scoring, or capacity planning), building dashboards and KPIs, and/or providing data analytic support for advanced analytics (e.g., machine learning modeling)
  • Proficiency with Python and at least one database query language (e.g., SQL); exposure to modern data science environments (e.g., cloud, Jupyter, and git) would also be beneficial
  • Prior experience converting your analytic results into stories and presenting them to peers and senior stakeholders
  • Critical thinking skills, talent for project planning and execution, ability to convert hypotheses into clear action items, and focus on results
  • Drive to tackle demanding goals with enthusiasm, tenacity in the face of stubborn obstacles, and interest in pursuing personal and technical development alongside other commitments
  • Commitment to client needs and satisfaction, humility in the face of constructive, well-meaning feedback, and production of high-quality work that builds trust and confidence with stakeholders

You'll fit in by
  • Collaborating with members of the Data Science, Sales/Partnerships, Marketing, and Operations teams
  • Embracing the challenge of answering difficult business problems, creating structured solutions from disorganized data pools, and deepening your understanding of consumer financial behavior
  • Leveraging your interest in technology to solve problems computationally
  • Being resourceful, creative, tenacious, and focused on getting things done
  • Assuming positive intent and communicating with skilled candor and respect

You'll love it because
  • The data science team is dedicated to solving important and high-impact questions unconstrained by assumptions or approach
  • You'll have the opportunity to work in a successful, fast moving, mission-driven company
  • You'll access growth opportunities and collaborate with highly motivated, intellectually curious, and genuinely nice colleagues
  • MX has a fun office environment, competitive benefits, and many perks (including 401(k) match, free meals, unlimited PTO, and work-from-home)
  • We're an award-winning company across multiple categories (e.g., Inc. Magazine Best Workplaces 2021, Women Tech Council 2021 Shatter List, and 2021 Forbes Cloud 100)

MX is an equal opportunity employer. We value diversity and seek candidates with broad backgrounds and experiences. We particularly welcome applications from veterans and military spouses.
