The Senior Data Analyst will be a key team member on the United Clinical Services Medical Policy Team. They will support the creation and management of UHC's medical policies by obtaining and analyzing data to support evidence driven research, utilization scenario forecasts and identifying trends in medical policies to enable proactive policy development strategies.
In this role you will leverage analytics, modeling, and forecasting skills to ensure Medical Policy's decisions are informed by the most meaningful metrics and the most up to date data. You will navigate a wide range of data in this role including claims, prior authorization, and peer reviewed publications. You will identify opportunities for Medical Policy's strategic advancement and identify problems before they emerge.
Additionally, you will build out and maintain visual dashboards to provide both internal and enterprise stakeholders with a clear picture of the progress, potential, and value being generated by Medical Policy.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, review, forecast and trend complex data
  • Create and provide monthly reports using claims data for medical policies undergoing review
    • aggregated across all lines of business, and
    • separated into individual lines of business
  • Model utilization scenarios to assess for the business impact of over-/under-utilization
  • Present findings on healthcare data trends at department meetings, identifying areas of potential waste and support for safety/quality action, leveraging industry benchmarks
  • Evaluate the impact of new or significantly revised Medical Policies through comparison of pre- versus post-implementation data findings
  • Report data on specific healthcare services by geographic regions/local markets
  • Develop and deliver internal facing and client facing analytics and reporting activities via Tableau/Power BI dashboards
  • Support short - and long-term operational/strategic business activities through analysis
  • Provide ad hoc data analyses on a variety of policy issues that may arise
  • Analyze data on medical technologies for possibly policy development
  • Compare the performance of policies based on implementation approaches


Key Skill Sets:

  • Comfortable working in a self-directed role where work is not perfectly prescribed, working with less structured, more complex issues
  • Able to solve complex problems and develop innovative solutions for internal and external audiences
  • Easily understands requirements from the client/business, able to turn those requirements into an appropriate analysis, report, dashboard and/or scorecard

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Analyst in the healthcare industry analyzing multiple data asset types (e.g., administrative claims, EMR, etc.)
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau/Power BI
  • Demonstrated advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including V-lookups and pivot tables


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated advanced level of proficiency in PowerPoint and presentation skills
  • Programming (SAS, SQL) best practices

Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $82,100 to $146,900. The salary range for Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $90,500 to $161,600. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
