The Opportunity

As Ortho continues to grow, we are seeking a Scientist I as a member of a cross functional team. Responsible for performing a wide variety of functions related to experimental design and analysis of testing utilizing appropriate statistical methodologies. This position is located in Rochester, NY.

The Responsibilities

  • Performs experimental test designs in the laboratory, to support development of new in vitro diagnostic products and processes.
  • Utilizes statistical methods to analyze experimental data.
  • Interprets data and draws conclusions.
  • Readily discriminates between normal and abnormal variation.
  • Presents data to functional project team.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed in accordance with Current Good Manufacture Process (cGMP) practices, established quality protocols and other standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintains analyzer equipment related to testing, and performs necessary calibration, QC and documentation per SOPs.
  • Maintains a safe working environment through the proactive identification of hazards and risks.
  • Works cooperatively with others to help a team or work group achieve its goals.
  • Performs other work duties as assigned.



The Individual

  • Typically requires 0-2 years of experience with Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Medical Technology or related sciences field.
  • Experience in experimental design and analytical analysis, including data evaluation and interpretation.
  • Basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Minitab or other statistical software is preferred.
  • Ability to utilize good judgment working independently and within a team setting.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory skills, techniques and data analysis.
  • Ability to carry out general biochemical laboratory procedures including handling of human blood/serum samples and reagents for testing purposes.
  • Knowledge of safe chemical and biological handling.
  • Phlebotomy experience preferred but not required.



Key Working Relationships:

Internal: Works within the R&D project team and has daily interaction for planning and execution of team activities. Cross functional collaboration with many departments and project team members. Meets with cross functional team members to meet goals.

External: May interact with outside vendors for arrangement of service or calibration of test equipment or procurement of raw materials or test specimens.

Key Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Trains Employees.
  • Plans work of others.
  • Reviews work quality and quantity of others.
